My NH 68 hayliner died a horrible death yesterday,, so the neighbor gave me his NH 270 that he couldnt keep in time,, well I cleaned it up, made the PTO shaft from the 68 work on the 270 and got her working, she baled about 60 bales and started shearing the pin, the needles werent coming all the way back,, checked the timing and it was still in time, finally ended up fastening a bungee cord on the needle arm and using that to pull the needles back,, this worked well for another 100 bales or so,, now I am back to snapping shear pins,, any ideas? Does anyone have the timing for one of these? I think I have it timed but it looks like maybe the fingers that pull the hay into the chamber might be a lil off time,, could this be my trouble? how about a stretched chain? I am looking for a manual for this machine,,, Thanks,,,Jim

We have used one of these for decades and I would say that obviously several of you have worked on one of these. We have experienced about every quirk that one can and have used most of these remedies as one time or other. The most bizarre problem has brought me this question. Leaving one washer out allowed a part of the knotter to move slightly to the left (as you face the knotter) and occasionly catch, breaking a pin and leaving the needles in the bale chamber. The worn safety catch proceeded to slip out of position allowing the plunger to come through and destroy the needles. The problem has been found and fixed, but now the needle yoke is hopelessly bent. Attempts to get it back in line do not help. Does another know where I might find a used needle yoke for a 270?

Jim,

The former owner of my 270 had the same complaint. I must have cleaned out 50 broken shear bolts from the tool box.

As previously mentioned, check the knotter brake. Mine was coated with grease and would not hold the needles in the home position, causing the safety latch dog to engage.

To check the timing, I would first check the plunger to feeder tine timing. Rotate the flywheel in the direction of the arrow until the plunger crank arm is vertical and is located between the marks located in the top of the bale chamber. Then, remove the rear cover and check to see that the feeder tine bar pivot point (where the grease fitting is located) is located between the two marks stamped in the framework of the feeder. To re-time, remove the master link from the feeder drive chain (which is located under the L.H. chain cover closest to the flywheel), line up all the marks and reinstall the chain. Now the feeder and plunger are timed.

Next, check the needle/knotter drive timing. The timing is correct if the needles just begin to enter the bale chamber when the tips of the projections on the face of the plunger have passed the points of the needles by 1/4" to 3/4".

Manuals are available from CNH Publications. Their number is: (800) 635-4913.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Good luck,
Scott

P.S.: Be sure to check the timing of the needle/knotter drive after checking or adjusting the feeder drive. Make sure all the drive chains are good and snug.

If you need to adjust the needle/knotter drive, let me know and I will fax you the info.. It is a bit difficult to decribe, but easy when you have the photos to refer to.

Regards,
Scott

Make sure that the linkage between the knotter and the needle yoke is adjusted correctly. also make sure the plunger latch is set correct. I bet that just the tip of the plunger latch is catching.

jim, we have a 268 baler and the manual we got with it was a 276 manual..most info is the same although there are differences here and there..if you believe the timing info in our 276 manual is correct for your 270, we would be happy to copy the timing pages and fax or email them to you as attachments...steve.ps. info is on tine bar timing( this is related to your chain question,if out of time, chain needs to be removed and timing re-established),also there is info on needle timing, and so on.

My 270 manual is at the other house. You know the feed forks chain needs to be timed too.

It acted like yours once. Had nothing to do with timing. That bar that goes from the plunger stop to the needles - I adjusted that back 1/16 of an inch (2 small bolts near the needle arm clamp a little triangle of metal that catch a roller)), and it worked fine since then.

Is your disk brake on the knotter shaft working? If not it will let the needles drift down a bit & cause your problems. That brake needs to be grabbing.

Ibet it is one of those 2 items - as it worked with the bungie cord, keeping the needles solidly in the home position.
