My neighbour has a 504I. When they start the baler after dumping the bale the belts won't turn until they get a large enough wad into the throat. This makes for a very frustrating job. They thought the belts were stretched so they cut them to book spec and relaced them but this did not help. The tension springs appear to be ok. Any help would be appreciated.

There is also a small 6 inch spring below the main spring. It sits behind the tire and is a bear to get to. If it isn't tight enough, it will cause your problem. The book will tell you how long it should be, don't remember off hand. If you can't find, I'll look it up for you.

Sounds like the belts are getting hard and slick. Try having the baler turning when closing the gate. I have to do this when first starting out until the belts get warmed up.

The OEM belts on a Vermeer bale will NEVER stretch. They have the same construction as you auto tires and you tires do not stretch. The problems is simple. They just need to clean out chaff from the springs to get back to the proper start tension. Now that they have shortened the belts that will have to be re-adjusted. The belts should be 424" long. The baler will work if properly adjusted even if the belts are 418" but the start tension must be re-adjusted and this will also limit the full bale size when the belts have been shortened. If your neighbor will call use 423-282-6969 we can tell him how to get his baler back to working properly.

I knew the Hay Dr would know the problem and the fix. The folks at CCM know balers.

If he tensioning springs are ok and adjusted properly, the only other thing I can think of is the drive roller is worn out/slick, or the back of the belts are too slick.

Got any grass wrapped around the drive roller which would allow for slippage?
