I have a problem with my 276 right hand knotter. I can go for 20-30 bales and then it messes up. I take the one bolt out of the bottom, clean out the mess on the bill and it will work again. The mess on the bill will be one small knot and then there will be one big knot with about four or five strings on it. What needs to be done to fix it.

The knife arm may be dull or bent improperly, but most of these problems are tension problems. Please do start with the things that Brandon spoke of, but baling too tight or too much clamp tension at that plate bolted on the side of the bale box are 2 of the biggest culprits. Email Edd from Kentucky and ask him to forward my replies to you that I sent to him. Steve

Just went through this with Edd from Kentucky. The thread is now on page 2, soon it will be on page 3. Read it all. If you don't have an operator's manual, buy one and read it. You will learn a lot about knotter troubleshooting.

Here are a few things to check; I have had the same problem with my 276 before also:

Check to make sure the bill is smooth.

Check the pressure on the bill hook tension spring; should be between 3-12 pounds. If there is too much tension, the bill will not release the knot.

Check the releasing arm of the bill. There is a small lip (kinda like a fish hook) on the arm. Make sure the hook has not developed a sharp point; this may cause the knot to hang up. Take a piece of emory cloth or a file and round the point to a smooth point.

Check the wiping arm to make sure it is contacting the bill when you raise the knotter stack. The wiping arm must contact the bill lightly in order to remove the knot from the bill.
