My old NH 66 broke again yesterday . The wade board chain broke and the board was in the chamber , so you can guess what happened. My question is what do you all recomend for a replacement baler. I run a David Brown 950 tractor and bale 600 - 800 bales a year? Thanks Paul

I love my little NH 270. Bought it cheap, was easy to fix and makes a nice bale. Hardly ever misses a knot. Only wish the pickup was a bit wider when baling big windrows. Parts are still available and used parts are plentiful.

I usually pull it with a 1650 Oliver, but have used a Farmall H successfully as well.

Good luck in your search!

Paul-Where are you located? I have a really good NH 68 for a modest price.--John

I would stay with the Deeres in the early version years 336,327 etc. I use to buck bales behind the early red units and we always were having to adjust the feeder forks more trying to get hay to far side of chamber. My preference is this period, if it does not have a packer fork then I don't want it. New Holland now has it on the 570 model, they must have learned something. I bale lots of small bales of hay and straw yet. Did another 2000 last weekend. Start 3rd cutting next week. I don't care what color it is but I do want the packer fork on it.

whatcha gonna do? in reply to Paul W, 07-11-2005 06:09:16
I'm still using my old NH 66...was wondering what you were doing with yours? If we're close enough, I might be interested in a parts baler.

Tom; we patched this baler up and baled another 100 yesterday and hopefully it holds together for the remainder 100 or so tonight. I have not thought about what to do with it after. I live in south east Ontario Canada. Paul

Paul:

thanks, glad you'll get your hay off the ground with it. Canada is probably a little far for me...I live near mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S.

good luck on finding a good replacement!

Tom

Gotta love the 273, we run about 1000 bales a year through it and it rarely misses. No experience with the JD balers, but I love my New Holland.

I'm a Deere square baler fan myself. (336) A few summers back, I had a chance to buy a New Holland 273 at a fair buck. I figured it would be worth what I paid to have as a spare. We bale a LOT of straw. Week before last, we had BOTH balers going non-stop. The old 273 never missed a beat. Averaged one mis-tie per every 75 bales or so.... Not bad for an antique! I've seen decent 273's for as cheap as $500 and some "like new" ones for under $2000. (I'll still take my green baler in a heartbeat!)

Seems anything without the wad board ( starting with a 69???) through a 271 is going to be a good older NH baler. If you find one in good shape, the model # isn't all that big a deal....

I will have to agree . My father inlaw helps me alot and he says only New Holland . But in all fairness we have never tried a John Deere. Sorry Indy, my snowblower and riding mower are JD though. Paul

Their 7000 series planters are very, very hard to top as well. ;)

But, NH has some great hay stuff. Love that NH 270 baler I've stood behind all my life, couldn't find a better one.

I bale with a NH 270 about 1500 bales a yr.with a JD60. Very dependable but not as fast as some.
