I have an old sickle mower made by new Idea. The two wheel type pto only. anyway there is two gears on it to turn the blade and to lift the blade. I drained the old lube from both gears but am not sure as to what I should refill it with and how much since it only has serk fittings and no overflow plug that I can see. Any information would be helpful. thank you!

dunno about your sickle, but I wasted a lot of gear lube oil one day trying to lube up the wobble box. When it all ran out all over the place I realized I missed something.

Got to feeling around as I moved the sickle ba ck and forth and sure nuf found a zerk. IF you have zerks, you normally don't have a reservoir that requires filling.....but you said you drained some out so I guess it is.

Gear boxes are never full; usually no more than 40% of their height. The spinning gear slops the oil around and the oil gets pretty hot in most and causes expansion. Need a cusion of air in there to absorb the expansion.

HTH,

Mark
