Straw and weeds

So how much weeds(mostly lambsquarter) is too much in straw? I tried the roundup option, it has been 12 days and they are dying just not totally dry. The weeds are 24 - 36" tall. If I avoid all weeds I would be reduced to about 4 out 12 acres... Another 4 isn't too bad, and 4 acres are pretty weedy.

Of course we have been dry for a while but 'Dennis' will be here on Tues. Wheat is being harvested today and is quite dead. SO I assume I could bale the clean straw immediately. What about the weedy stuff?

Should I:

bale clean immediately.
Bale semi-weedy on Monday after drying for a couple days
Forget the weedy stuff...

I can get rid of some weedy straw by mulching the garden and giving some to my father-in-law for his cows(he pins them up in Jan when they give birth. Free is Free to him plus I am using a couple of his wagons...

Thoughts?

I don't know about your market, but weedy straw would be a no sale here to anyone except/maybe? mushroom buyers. Ed Winkle in Southern Ohio (I hope he doesn't mind the reference) has calculated that the fertilizer value of straw is around $1/40 lb bale. Unless you are double cropping, I would let it rain on the real weedy stuff and then mow with a rotary after the weeds regrow. We have 50 acres of weed-free straw and this policy has been used the last ten years. The semi-weed straw, bale for your garden and father-in-law.

Hi Joe,
Hope your baling straw will go better than mine did today. I am trying to get the old NH to swallow a large windrow out of a CaseIH with a 20ft.+ head. The father-in-laws 1650 Oliver wouldn't go slow enough, even in 1st with the hy-driv in low range, so I had to put my IH1466 on the baler (more tractor than I need for baling). The 1466 goes a little slower in 1st gear,low range and using the torque. ]
Its best not to ride a clutch and definitly not on your father-in laws tractor.
I did find out most of slip clutch pads on my baler was gone. So I am replacing them tomorrow and that should help. I will probally shear pins now. I may end up spliting the windrows up with the rake. I would bale it if your father-in-law can use it with the weeds. I would bale it after it had some time for the weeds to cure a little. I am not sure if that what you should do but thats what i would do. I seeded alfalfa in the wheat early spring and looks like it took. All we need is some rain after I get the wheat off. Never rains when I need it though. I could always cut some hay to make it rain. Good Luck with the staw.

A BIG John Deere combine came in with a 30 foot head. Talk about a windrow..... I have a JD327. I sure hope it can swallow everything it is given.....
