Flail Mower Question

I have a 918H flail mower. It's old enough to still say "Ford" on it. It mows good, but it vibrates a little. Is this normal? One set of knives/blades (the pair) is missing and the mount has been broken off. Is that enough to cause it to vibrate? Should I weld on a piece of metal to help offset this?

Anyway, my tractor is 40 HP and the mower is the 71-inch cut model rated up to 70 HP. My tractor moves it around, but do you think it's too much for it? (As in, what does "up to 70 HP" start at? Dad's JD Model 40 is probably a little small for this mower, right?)

I am considering selling it, but I don't know anyone around here that'd want the darn thing.

The knives are not expensice at al for the Ford flail mower....

My 6 1/2' ford flail needs at least a good gas JD 60 on it in heavy stuff, but I would think your 40 just may handle the 6' flail in average conditions... I got by for a year with a JD "all-fuel" 60 (about 31 Horse Power), but it was slow going, at times in 1st gear. Try it, they do a real nice job compared to a Bush Hog..!!

I've got a Ford 907 flail mower and run it with either my IH 454 gas or Farmall 504. Both right in the 45hp range. They handle it allright, if I get into something heavy I'll hook it up to the Oliver 1755 diesel (doesn't even know it's there). I get some vibration out of mine, I'd say it's just the nature of the beast. I actually perfer it over a brush hog.
