I am at my wits end trying to fix a knotter problem on an old NH 276 sqr. baler.
The right knotter works great, never misses. but the left will bale 20 in a row then, begin to hang knots on the bill hook. I've tried everything, New bill hook, sharpened the cutter, tightened and loosened the knot sweeper arm,, rotated the twine discs. Nothing seems to make a difference. It does seem to tie better on a long consistent windrow when the chamber is full and the next bale is pushing harder to help pull the knot off the bill hook. Any ideas? I have lots of hay down and I need to get this baler going consistently. Thanks for your help. Any ideas are welcome.

Hello and thanks for the thoughtful replies. I have been working on the baler most of the day using your suggestions. I did not bale today. Tried to get several things done on the baler.

Here is what I have done.

Put in softer--brown- twine.

Bent the knife arm, it was way off specs. I was surprized I did not break it. Ordered a new knife for it per Steve. Which I will install next week when it arrives.

Checked the twine box tension. It still had the factory paint on the nuts so I loosened it a little. Did not seem too tight.

Loosened the bill hook roller a little...maybe it was holding the fingers too close.

Two other items. There was a bit os play in the stack so my local parts dealer gave me a shim to fill the slack and reduce the play along the driveshaft.

Last I found that the lock nut and bolt below the worm gear on the twine disc is broken off. It seems to have been this way for a long time. The twine disc is aligned according to the book so it does not seem to effect the operation. Will this cause problems and big repairs long term? I think the worm gear is threaded onto the shaft so it should not work off too easily? Any ideas?

I'll order a new worm gear shaft Monday, but can I bale tomorrow?

Many thanks to all, I'll let you know what happened after tomorrow!!!

The worm gear fits on a taper on its shaft, no threads, key or other means. The nut holds it on the taper, and twine disc timing is changed by rotating the worm gear on the shaft. Twine disc pinion is pinned to the shaft with an 80837 grooved pin. You should replace the shaft. 86629480 is the shaft number, about $10. Not sure why your parts guy sold you a shim to take up the knotter stack endplay. You actually remove shim(s) from under the cap bolt at the right end of the knotter shaft after loosening the clamp bolt on the needle bail crank arm.

Rick B. I'll order the shaft Monday, thanks for the number. Can I continue to bale today or will the worm come off the shaft and tear things up?

Edd, let me know if the things talked about here and the things I emailed you worked or not. There is another issue that can cause this. That would be a bent and twisted twine finger rod. I won't bother discussing this if these other things worked. Steve

check the brass rollers on the knife arm. if they are worn ,the arm won't have enough travel to push the knot off the billhook.also check the cast iron knotter frame for wear around where the roller rides. i brazed ours up & got the knotters working until i bit the bullet & bought new knotter assembies (which has not missed a bale for a long time now but i'm still hurting from the 1700.00 i spent on it) good luck Jim S.

Make sure the knife arm clears the billhook by 3/8 to 1/2" beyond the billhook at its furthest travel. I adjust nearer the 1/2" figure. As mentioned, billhook cam tension may be too great. Twine finger timing may be late, as checked by adjusting the home position. Twine tension at the twine box may be too high.

Rick B, Thanks for the advice. I have a copy of the manual but several of the things you mention are covered so slightly that I am not sure how to try them. How do I adjust billhook cam tension? Is that the arm that touches the billhook roller? It has a sprng and stamped nut?

Check, twine tension at the twine box too tight? Do I just adjust the spring on the slide bar where it conmes out of the twine holder box?

I really apreciate the advice. I think at this point it is some little thing that I am totally missing. Edd

!. Yes, the spring loaded arm thet contacts the billhook roller. Should take about 6lb pressure or so to open the hook. Twine tension at the box is adjusted with the clamp just outside the box. Too little tension and the twine will get out of the needle eye and you may have a third twine tied into the knot.

Did you try to loosen the spring tension on the billhook itself? It may be too tight. Also, overgreasing the billhook can cause the twine not to slip off the billhook as easily even though the wiper arm is adjusted etc. Usually it would wrap around it. The wiper arm does have to be in adjustment to "swipe" the twine off the billhook during its full travel. There should be a spec. on how much tension the wiper arm has against the billhook itself. I think it is at least a few pounds. You could try that.
