NH Rake

I have a NH rake and I am not sure of the model. It is a ground drive that has an engage/disengage shaft that runs into the gear box. A long wire that leads to the front of the rake allows me to disengage by pulling on that wire.
The problem is when I try to start the rake it sometimes starts (engages)and sometimes doesn"t. I have to play around with it starting and stopping, reverse, etc until it engages then it is usually OK. My first thought was the gear box- opened that up looks like its OK.
Next I went down to the wheel and hub. Opened it up to better understand how it works. I found a small "lobe" tha pivots and engages the hub to provide drive to the rake bars. Problem is this thing is very loose and I think that is the problem. The end is a bit worn but I would think it would still catch in the hub indentations. Can I get a replcement lobe? My gut tells me there should be a spring in there somewhere-am I right? One more question - when I opened the gear box it was full of a grease/oil like brown substance. I can"t say it was oil but I am not sure it was grease? Maybe a mixture? The previous owner could have filled it with grease to compensate for bad seals? What is the correct product to put in there? Could I just fill it with tube or two of grease?
Any help would be great.
thanks in advance
tom

SOunds like the spring that engages the gear bow internal is a little weak or dry of grease. When I got my used 56 it was release the cable and then pull back on the engage lever. Took almost a year of regular use with good EP 0 grease in it to get it free ad working right.

If your rake has a straight rear axle it is a NH 55 rake. If it has the right wheel tucked in close to the rake basket, the rear axle has angles in it, it is newer. There should be a plate on the frame near the gearbox telling you what it is.

The gearboxes should be filled with good grease these days. they originally came with oil, but that has been updated.

On my 55, I had a dog (the metal lobe) that would wreck the spring in there. Looked good, the dealer even said the lobe did not look wore much, just a tiny bit. But, wrecked 3 springs, so I got a new lobe & spring. Works good now. Think the lobe was $9 a couple years ago.

The real problem is the wheel hub is wearing loose on the axle shaft - didn't get enough grease. On the 55 there is nothing to do when it wears out, unless you have a machine shop mill it out & put in a bushing. As this wear gets worse, the dog or lobe does not engage properly & things don't work.

There is a dog or lobe on each wheel hub, check them both. Even if one is worn out or spring shot, the other should drive the rake. You must have both out.
