Im looking to make some hay for the first time next year and shopping for used hay equipment. I have a few questions. Will the tractor require rear hydraulic hookups for a disc mower or square baler? What is the best square baler and disc mower/conditioner? What are the pros and cons of using a wheel rake verses older types? Price range for average equipment would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You left out some useful information like how many acres do you plan to do? That makes a big difference for equipment needs. As far as square balers go I would stick with the big two- John Deere or New Holland. Lots of them around for parts, proven knotter design, dealers usually not to far away.

GoFirJD. Let me know what types looking for have all types used and new. older 300 series bales are good in JD.Disc mower is the no hassle way to mow and wheel rakes are simple to use. If have little patches you might want stay with basket style.

The CCM drum mowers do not require exterior hydraulics and are only $2,300 NEW. They will give the technology of a disc mower at half the price of a disc mower.
A good used disc mower usually sells for $2,000-3,000. If you pay less for a used disc mower expect to work on it some.

If you deal with the one suggested,be sure to view equipment personally prior to purchase.I did not! Most everything I got was overhauled with a coat of paint.
