Now this should be fun. I replaced the bearing on the end of the drive shaft but as you can see. There is some thing more wrong. All the sprockets and such have moved to the left about 1/8th inch or so. Threw the chain as soon as I hit some grass. Got the parts book on the way. Just need to know if this is fixable or should I cut my losses?

Kelly, Just got done replacing same stuff a month or so ago. First, did you remember the lock collar on the bearing. I cut my bearing off, but if you used a hammer you might of drove the shaft into the gear box. The bearings are held in place with snap rings, but the shaft can be driven inwards. It is my guess that is what happened. I replaced all the bearings in the gearbox and the outboard bearing for about $60. To remove the gear box iseasy now that I have did it. Remove PTO shaft, remove plate that wheel bolts to. remove wheel, remove bearing. remove outer bearing(the one you replaced). remove four bolts holding gearbox support. Pry, pull and cuss, but the gearbox will tilt and slide out. When I got mine out I needed to replace the bushing in the over-riding clutch hub(big chain sprocket) and build up the shaft. The shaft comes out of the gearbox by removing nut on inside of gearbox, and just keep working at it, it will slide out through the bearing. Put mine back together, lined it up (the outside bearing holder has some lateral adjustment)and it works like new, can't believe the difference. Good luck, but don't get rid of it

I have a NH 460 and I rebuild the gear box and new bearings you have to have shaft at right place in gear bow for bevel gears to mesh and then I had to use washers to align all my sprockets but that's been 6 years ago and many acres and we're still making hay. Your're right in that you got to have the sprockets lined up or you'll keep throwing chains and play havoc with your wooble box drive belt.

Kelly my friend, all things are possible or in this case all things are fixable. Kelly, I can't quite see. Is the bearings out in the gearbox that let everything slide? It looks to me that the sprockets not only slid, but they are crooked as well. Steve

Hey Steve. Thanks for RE:ing on this one.
Bad Photo. The sprockets were tilted slightly before the new end bearing.

Qestion... Should not the end cap. The one on the end of the shaft with the 9/16 th bolt be tight aganst the bearing?
Seems to me there is some thing missing on that end of the rig. Bearing can play alot in the holder.

As far as the gear box I dont know. I put new gear lube in it. Had to the bottom of the gears in it. Looked ok as far as I know. But man O man, what a place to put a gear box.

I need that parts book bad just so I can see how its suppose to look.
Did NH have a cheat sheet for tearing into that end of that machine? Looks like I may break a few things just figuring how to get at it. I got big hammers :-)

I also noticed that the wheel bearings are shot on the wheel on that side. I can see why they never packed them. Not quite as bad as the reel bearings on my NH55 rake... but...

Which chain the small one or the big one?? Had a problem like that on my 460 and I had to replace the sprockets and chain because they had seen one to many hour of mowing. You might check how good the chain and sprockets are.

All of them. The whole works is shifted 1/8 inch.
I was wondering if that shaft that I put the bearing on has some thing to do with it.
Seems like that the shaft is just resting on the bearing not pressure pulling on the shaft at all.
