New Holland 68 baler with a thrower?

I am pretty sure I know the answer to this but I'll ask anyways. My dad has a old New Holland 68 that he used to bale hay with about 8 years ago when he still had me about to stack the hay on the wagons. Well, I left home for the military. At the sametime, a family we are really good friends with and boys I grew up with had a tragedy. The only boy still living at home (17) had a fatal ashma attack which we all took really hard. Well, my dad and the father agreed to bale all their hay together which is about 200 round bales and about 5000 square bales combined. This was decided mostly because the neither family had no help to put hay down, ted it, rake it, and get it up into the barn. My dad decided to retire the old 68 being it didn't have a thrower and was going to need alittle work even though it did still bale when last parked. Now all the squares get done with their New Holland 310. Understandably the father wants to be the one running the baler because obviously the baler is expensive to fix so if it breaks he wants it to break on his watch even though my dad mows and everything else. Well, this summer I have been home helping both them get hay done and I'm kinda going nuts. It seems like me and my dad get everything all tedded and raked for him and he doesn't get started baling until 5-6 PM when it was ready to go at 2-3 PM. I understand he works another job and the farm isn't his primary source of income anymore, but that is crazy. I was wondering if New Holland ever made a thrower that would fit on a 68 and what the model number was? I'm considering resurrecting the old girl and installing a thrower. I was in a tractor salvage yard looking for a drawbar for this other family's 1365 Oliver that somehow got lost and saw quite a few 68's. One in particular got my attention because it had the front unit of a thrower on it, but the shaft was frozen and the back half was gone. I was wondering if this was a homemade deal or if it was actually offered? Looking around at used balers I have discovered that to get anything in any kind of working shape you need to spend $1500, which is hard to justify when alot of other things need to get done around here if you know what I mean. Sorry for the novel and thanks for the help.

I have a 68 baler with a model 50 thrower that works great! It's driven off the flywheel of the baler using a belt and a long shaft, not engine driven. Parts are readily availble from NH, and the bearings are farm store "off the shelf". Trust me, if your handy, pretty much anything can be resurrected. Where are you? I know of a good guy in southern PA who has a great ag salvage yard. I know he has a 53 sitting on the ground in half decent shape.

If it wouldn't be too troubling would you be able to get some pics of it? I'm kinda curious how it is setup. Thanks for the help.

PS. I'm in the military still and I live down by Frederick in MD, but my dad lives up by Erie PA.

If you're at Ft. Detrick, you're actually very close to both of us. The name of the salvage place is Bud Yingling's, and it's just north of Taneytown over the PA line toward Gettysburg. Phone is listed in PA 411. No more than 30 minutes, if that. Give him a call. I know he has at least one, because I saw it last week. He could probably cobble all the parts together for you. Bud's a good man. I'm in eastern Frederick county in Mt. Airy. If you want to see mine up close and personal, drop me an email and I'll give you directions. Heck, for a soldier, if you're homesick I'll even let you stack some bales ;) I'm about 20 mins east of you off of I-70. Going to bale a little today, start second cutting in a couple weeks if we get a little rain.

The two choices would be a Model 50 engine driven thrower or a Model 53AS shaft driven thrower. Engine driven throwers were poor at best when new. Chances of finding a decent 53AS without buying the baler it is attached to are extremely slim. Best bet is to plan on upgrading the baler or getting Dad to let someone else bale the hay when it is ready. If you do find a thrower, remember to get the offset axle mount for the chamber side wheel.
