Am looking into updating my old horse drawn hay rake. It's plum wore out. Are those NH 55's any good? What price range are they in? Thanks.

The 55 goes in the $300 range around here, $250-450.

The better (because the right wheel is set in close to follow bumpy ground) 56 & 256 models go in the $450 range - $350-600.

These are farm auction prices, dealer would ask more....

Nothing wrong with a 55 rake. I have 2 of them with a hydraulic hitch between them. Some of the parts are no longer available so keep that in mind.

I have one that my dad had and I have been using it for 30 years. He bought off a widow whose hubby surely bought new. I even made a dolly wheel for it. I still use it to turn windrows behind a JD v-rake when it gets damp. Keep thinking it will die but it doesn't. Cable is gone but I use a rubber tie-down to throw it out of gear. If I go on the road, which is seldom, I throw the dogs out of gear. Around here, worth about $500-$700.

NH 55 is a good rake for flat ground. If your
land has some rolls you would be better off with
a NH 56 or 256. The wheels are staggered to follow
the ground better. The 55 is old now so look for
one in good shape.
