I have bought a 504g Vermeer. It seems to make my IH 784 work when the bale gets around 4 feet. The inside of the baler is a little rusty, would that make that much of a drag? There is a deflector plate on one side. I have read about replacing a gear and/or turing the gear box to reduce the power needed. Can someone explain turing the gear box and how I can tell what way mine is now?

Thanks.

I also bought a 504G this year, that I am running behind an Oliver 1600 (60 hp). My bale chamber was also a little rusty. The first few bales were hard, and the 1600 was really working at about the 4 foot mark, but now that I have rolled 30 bales it"s really loosened up. I also had trouble getting the first couple of bales out of the baler - the wanted to stick !

Turning the gearbox around is for changing from 540 to 1000 rpm pto. I believe the gearbox is marked. You could turn the pto shaft backwards by hand. If the output is faster than the input, it is in the 540 position. It would run too slow to do a good job. Rust on the sides could be a factor.

If you change the main drive sprocket from a 13 tooth to a 12 tooth sprocket you will gain 5HP. This is very easy to do and not expensive. We have them in stock. 423-282-6969 If you turn the gearbox around it slows the baler down too much and the bale quality can suffer.
Once you run some hay through your baler, about 20-30 bales it should free up some as well.
