My prior post Hay "Making Equipment" I received some great responses, Thank you all.
Now I need help on analyzing what equipment I need for later this year or next year. Feel free to spend my $money and suggest the best. I try to get the best equipment and then work backwards as to what will get the job done. Safety is a big concern as I am new so I will spend up for safety. From reading this site there are very knowledgeable people here and I feel very confident that their suggestions will help me tremendously. I would like to thank everyone who responds. SO PLEASE SPEND AWAY AND SUGGEST THE BEST.

I need some advice on what to do about 80 acres of alfalfa I planted last year. I owned the 80 acres for the past 18 years. Last year my farmer who I rented to decided to retire. I decided to buy a tractor, plow my ground and plant alfalfa. The reason I chose alfalfa was there is an alfalfa mill close by who would harvest the crop. Well the 1st cutting has not happened yet and I do not know when it will happen. I need to make plans to take it off myself. I have no hay making equipment. I do have my 1466 International tractor 130 hp that only has 1000 pto my other tractor is 3414 international loader gas 40hp with the 540 pto. I have very limited funds for this equipment but I plan on using it for at least 5 years. Any thoughts or suggestions would be very helpful.

I would start with a IH 1066 tractor or any of the 66 series. I would then look for a NH 1411 or 1412 disc bine. I have a NH 489 haybine with stub guards that I really like but I will trade up eventually. For a square baler go with a NH 575 and for a round baler I like the JD 457 with cover edge.

Since I am spending your money this is what I would have were money no object. As far as tractors go, I would still have 7--- series Fords though I'd probably go with 7610's and 7740's. For the equipment.

NH/NI/Vermeer disc conditioner, 12'
Twin hydraulic drive NH 258 rakes with v and offset hitch
Newer version of my NH 650 baler
338 JD square baler
1068 NH automatic bale wagon
Cat 80hp skid loader with square bale grapple and round bale spear
10 bale transport wagon
18' hydraulic fold tedder.

A thought might be to put an ad in Y-T classified saying you would trade a 14 for a 7 or 8 and boot; Use the boot to purchase a good NH haybine, etc.

Just start shopping around. You can buy good sevicable 14 ft swathers for $2500 and balers starting around 5K that would be worthy of 80 acres alfalfa. just make sure you buy 1000 pto. I set up from scratch a few years ago and ended up about $10 total in tractor, baler, rake and swather. but then I got lucky.

Man, I wish I coulda got started with 10 g's! I am doing about 100 acres of grass hay. I allready had a Kubota M4700 with loader, $16000, and I bought a Hesston 5500 baler, $2200, a NH 256 dolly wheel rake,$1500, aJD 1217 moco for $1250 whcih turned out to be junk and traded it in on a new Vicon 7'10" disc mower and gave $4400 difference, a JD 4-basket tedder for $1400, a 6-bale side dump trailer for $3000, and an Oliver 1955 with cab for $6000 then spent another $3000 gettting it the way I wanted it, but now I am set! So all in I am at nearly 40 big one's, but I got a pretty good bunch of stuff, but some days I think I am off my rocker.

how much hay do you do luke to have that kind of money tied up? i don't do alot, maybe 60-70 acres total, it's all in small chunks spread out though. i know i don't have 10k tied up in equipment and it all works great.

NE Cowman is right - you can find some really good deals if you spend a little time and effort at looking around. I got a Ford 515 sickle bar mower, a JD 660 rake and a Ford 532 baler for $350.00. All came from a guy who tried his hand in the cattle business and decided the money was not worth the effort. He just wanted to get rid of the equipment. I don"t know what he paid for the stuff initially, but I"ve had all three pieces for four years and have had nothing but good performance from it all.

For that acreage I would suggest either a 9ft wide haybine which you should be able to find a good used for one less than $3,000 or a Disc Mower which will cut 4 times as fast for around $6500. I would suggest being a little fussy with the baler and find a newer-80s or 90s machine in nice shape so that you produce nice, well tied square bales. A decent baler can be found for less than $3500. Lastly a decent New Holland 256 rake can be found for around $1500 to 2000.I hay with a JD 1207 haybine, JD24T and 14T balers(one always seems to work right)and a 256 rake. I also have a 2 row tedder to help speed the drying process.How is everyones hay this year? I am here in Vermont and we are running late but its thick where we fertilized! Good luck and have fun!
