brush hog pto shaft?

Hi, i bought i 5ft brush hog at auction this past weekend. the pto shaft won't slide in or out. any ideas on how to unstick this? could it be bent? or more than likely rust?...thanks for any help....New at tractors but loving it. massey 65 is what i bought....thanks again

It could be either bent or rusty. Rusty is most likely. When ours gets too bad and won"t pull by hand, we hook a come along anchored to something solid, to it. Use lots of penetrating oil and after you get it pulled out you can oil, clean, etc, working it in and out till it works decent. Do you have that odd shaped one of real thin material?

I'm not sure about odd shape this is my first pto driven implement but its made out of a very heavy steel.I'll chain it to a tree tomorrow and try to winch it apart...Thanks very much

If it's odd shaped you'd know it. Otherwise it is square. The square ones are usually made from heavier metal.

Once you get it out and cleaned up, grease the heck out of the sliding part.

Also drilling a small hole at the ujoint end of the outer section (through the tubing wall) will allow air to come and go releasing any vacuum that may occur on a tight fitting shaft which will help the movement especially when trying to move it by hand.

You may be able to free it up yourself, When I do have to have them worked on I go right to Fleet Pride, much better luck than at the dealers. Good Luck. Lou

Got it! wasn't to bad hooked it to the draw bar and then chained it to a tree then just rolled forward and it came right out. Once again, thanks a bunch for the help

Our Bush Hog used to have that problem all the time. Our shaft was rectangular shaped. We always winched it apart also. When we finally took the guard off to look at it, it had about a 90 degree twist in about 8 inches of the shaft. If this is the case in yours, you should check your shear pin. It may be too strong of a bolt.
