Yes I have just purchased a model no. 272 new idea hay cut/ditioner. Im wondering what years these were made. I'm thinking early 60's probably. I keep hearing though it takes atleast a 100-125 hp tractor too pull these. Then again there were no 100 hp in the early 60's. Any Information will be appreciated

I have a 272 that I have been running with my 43 hp Kubota. With sharp knives, I have no problem cutting through thick hay on flat ground. On hilly ground I use my David Brown 990 just because it is heavier. Good Luck.

272 was made right up to about 1984. It replaced the 270 somewhere around 1965. The 7 footer needs about 55 PTO HP to work in all conditions, but can be run with less in lighter hay. The 9 foot 279 needs about 75 PTO HP. Keep the knives sharp and they"ll pull easier. In wet tangled grass a lack of HP will be very noticeable, but with enough in front they will mow anything and leave it all nice and fluffed up in a swath or windrow.

I tried using the 272 new idea hay cutditioner on a 48 hp 50 massey ferguson. Tractor ran hot in less than 10 minutes too hard too pull. Piece of equipment is now for sell for $150.00. Have a little info on this piece. Just need bigger tractor too pull it

Hmmm. My 65 is 48 HP. A 50 is only 36 HP. Old Masseys run hot, anyway. Radiators aren"t big enough. If you were near me, I"d buy that 272 off you.
