I need info on so called small round balers. What models are they, when made, how much tractor do you need to run one properly. Will be cutting hay on a small farm soon(about 80 acres of pasture), and the last time I did any hay work it was all square bales. any help and info will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

We bought a Vermeer Rebel 5400 last year, and it makes a nice 4'x5' roll. It calls for something like 40 hp to run, but we use a JD 730 diesel with it just for the extra tractor weight when rolling on hills.

I use a case int. 8420, 40"/48"roll with a l4310 kubota.I can make 12-15 bales an hour not real fast but it does a good bale,500-600#.A good mower to use is a ccm 165 drum mower, you can mowe as fast as the ground will allow you to travel,it works great.

AC Rotobalers had an engine option, but most were pto powered. Dad used his for years with a WC, but really appreciated the live pto on the WD45, since it is necessary to stop forward motion each time you need to wrap a bale.

How small?

The old Allis-Chalmers Roto-Balers made round bales.... They quit making them sometime around 1960... (I think)

I have a Vermeer 403F, which makes a 3 ft wide- 4 foot tall round bale. These are no longer made, but are a well built machine. Certainly it would work well behind 40 -60 hp range tractors. I like the smaller bale, since I can roll the bale by hand if necessary. Mike
