Question for JD #5 mower owners?

I'm having trouble with the end of my JD #5 mower plugging up. On the outside shoe there is no room for a guard, but it looks like on the shoe that there should be a piece that goes over the sickle section like a guard. Does anyone have close up pictures or tell me if something should be on it.

Any help appreciated.

There is a half section on the outter shoe. It is a real bear to put rivits in so I went yo countersunk head bolts on my #8. I take the outer section off the sickle and put on a 1 1/2 section that helps some on plugging. ON the later mowers like my #8 there is an adjustable plate over the sickle on the end to minimize distance between sickle bar and open top of shoe, that helps. In short grass it is sometimes just a bear. Will pull grass in between sickle and shoe and plug. Good outer 1/2 section helps along with 1 1/2 sickle end section. You can usually find them at farm store.

I have 1 1/2 sickle section on the end of the bar. The grass that I was cutting was pretty short, in the taller grass it cuts great.

I have 15 acres of orcharg that I'm cutting on shares this weekend, most of it is 5 feet high. I was just going through the mower to get it ready. Still need to pull the sickle and sharpend some of the sections. Next year it going to be time for new sections and most of the guards.

Bobg, If my memory serves me right there is a 1/2 wear plate that has seration to cut against the last section on the sicle. There are 2 holes that require brads to secure it to the outside shoe.

Steve,

What is the #10 pointing at? The mower cuts good in taller grasses, but in short grass it just plugs the end. I really need to get a manual for this thing.

This is a picture of a NEWER Deere cutterbar, but it sounds like the outer shoe on your old #5 may be a newer replacement and have the holes for item #16, H25548 STRAP.

Is item #19 H21533 LEDGER PLATE in place, also?

Bob,

How do you use the parts search on the John Deere site? I tried searching on #5 and 5, but came up with nothing.

The Deere site won't bring up a piece of equipment that old. As I said in my post, that cutter bar is from a newer mower, but it illustrates what you may have on yours.
