I talked to a guy today that has a NH 495 haybine, it is in decent shape, used, but in working condition, the wobble box looked sound, conditioning rolls were solid no rubber coming off. And of course the price is right $600. I own a JD 14T baler, and will be getting an Oliver 1650 this week. I'm sure the tractor can handle the mower, but can the baler handle the windrows that come out of it. Any opinions would be helpful as well. Rich

Rich Iowa; I take you are haveing trouble selling your hay, let me know as I have standing orders to fill and basically i am already pretty well sold out and booked. I am needing large rounds currently which I do not do much of,I specialize in small square. have a web site also www.RickSales.com go look and enjoy it. Needs some correcting yet thou. I rebale the large rounds when I get chance into smalls, way more dollars. Large rounds is quick but I feel is poor way to sell hay or straw dollar wise.

I have a couple people I"m talking to about selling hay. The lady I was selling to wanted pure alfalfa for her horses, and I have grass-alfalfa mix.

Welcome to the real world selling hay. Nobody wants the same when it comes to horses. As you will find out. You will have to have at least four to five different kinds to make it in that market. Thats why I really like the straw sales better as the mulcher/retail industry just wants clean stuff period. Eye appeal in the small bale industry equals sales.

Rich:

Where did you find the 1650 and the 495. I am quite pleased with the 495 I bought this spring and really like cutting the extra 3 feet with each swath.

The 1650 was in SW Iowa, 2 hour drive to see it, but I think it"ll be worth it. The 495 is located just south of Waukee, Iowa. Won"t be nearly the drive it was for you to get yours home. It is all ready in the transport position. I"m going to see if the guy can put it back in field position, to see it run, or at least see how it changes positions. What is involved in changing the position? I"ve never seen one repositioned. Your picture of the 1800 and the 495 looked like a real good setup. How are you advertising your hay crop; adds, word of mouth? Rich

Rich:

I have a small set of consistent customer plus I do some advertising. I have a 1/2 page add in the Iowa Horseman's Handbook and I have a website: www.IowaQualityHay.com

I also sell some hay at the Perry Hay Sale.

That 14T is not much of a baler. If it was brand
new it would be my last choice.

Depending on the hay the 14-T should do ok. I've used one on and off for years, the one I have now is driveing me crazy but thats another story. I've put some big wind rows in a 14-T and it just ate it up and spit them out. The Oliver is a little big for the 14-T and even a little over kil to the NH.

65 horse and 7800lbs is hardly overkill on a 12 foot side pull mower conditioner. I have seen a few 495's, and don't recall anyone running one with any less.

A 1650 is NOT overkill for the NH 495.

I thought the Ollie was a bit big too, but I'll buy a bigger baler when the need and money warrant. With only 5 acres, can't budget for a lot of big equipment, but would like to be ready when opportunities arise. I currently have a grass/ aflalfa mix, 2nd and 3rd cuttings not to worried about, but that 1st cutting has got me thinking I would need a lot more shearbolts for the baler.

Just take it slow. the slower you can go when you have that much tractor my be the best thing you can do. That way the poor old 14-T doesn't have to eat a lot fast. I pull a 14-T with a 77 and it just plays with it. I also pull an old NH 460 MOCO with a oliver 77 and it doesn't care if its there or not. So that oliver you have/ are getting will play with them. I also pull a NH 850 round baler with an Oliver Super 88 and it works it a little hard but it still does a great job, you should here it bark. But when it is makeing a 2000lbs bale I guess the S88 should bark and thats running it in 2nd gear.

i used to have a jd 14T.it isnt the power that is the problem. you can shear bolts with a wd allis. i know because i did it planty of time. the oliver is just fine. i pulled mine behid a wd ,d17 and 2-105 white.the bigger[ read newer} tractors usually have more speeds which is a plus for an older baler . it lets you slow down in tough or heavy hay or straw, where even with the wd's hand clutch i would sometimes still shear bolts and once the surfaces where the shear bolts connect become polished, you will shear bolts much easier .so it gets tricky trying to keep them from shearing.i'm debating myself whether to get a small older baler for my small amount of hay now or make a buck rake and put it up loose like some are doing now and avoid the hassles of owning another baler.since i do not have any buildings on my place anyway.or plan to sell any hay.

Well right now I'm on number 5, 14-T wore out 4 of them and now trying to get # 4 working right. But they are fun/ drive you crazy to play with. When I really want to get the hay up I use my NH 850, but some times a 2000lbs bale just doen't work.

If your concerned about the amount of hay in a windrow on the first cutting, don't cut the whole with of the cutter bar. I'm not familar with the NH 495, but when we would cut heavy hay with our old Owatana moco in heavy grass/clover we would only cut 3/4 of the sickle. We only had a IH 46 baler and it worked great this way.
