Went to check out the plantesr yesterday and was dissapointed to be sent out to the "back corner of the lot" to look through a bin of what amounted to spare parts. It was on my walk back to the dealers that I spotted them; a gang of four 71s, complete. They are mounted on a solid tool bar with gauge wheels, furrowers, and row markers. Complete, good bearings, good hoppers, depth bands and two sets of plates.Little challenging to load them into our box truck, but they are home now. Now the work can start. Any suggestions on obtaining a manual?

Manuals pop up on ebay from time to time. I bought a couple last year for about $12 each.

There should be a serial # on your row units. There were 3 different "production runs" and several modifications along the way on the #71. Try to get a manual from the run you bought. No earth-shattering changes, but still, some differences.

More valueable than the manual is the PARTS manual.

The depth bands are a nice feature. They're still available through Deere, but cost about $85 a row to install.

Watch Ebay for plates, and take a look at Lincoln Ags website.

By the way, does your planter have the (bigger) fiberglass seed boxes? Or the metal?

If you have picture capability, would you post a shot of the row markers?

Yes I'll post some pics in a few days. Label them JD 71s or some such clever handle. The hoppers are metal, with seed meters so simple it brought a tear to my eye. Did you say a couple manuals?????

Pics soon,

I bought mine off ebay. JD has them. Any chance that the dealer would still supply one with the units ? You'll need it to see what options were available and what parts to order.... Otherwise, the pn OM-A41062-C0.

If you want to know anything specific, send me an email.

Greg

Thanks, and you can pretty much count on more questions from this end. Right now I'm busy with the business (markets, CSA delivery etc) and some other equipment. I am switching my Howard tiller chain drive to SAE by cutting out the sprocket centers and replacing with a plate stock and SAE chain. Price of a new tiller metric tiller chain? $465.00- That's alot of carrots. Also fabricating a roller for the front of Planet Jr seeder to try and fine tune it a bit. Ill have about enough time to cut this JD unit down to size acquire a few seed plates and trial it before I don't need it until next year. Thanks for your help.

Hoping all is well,

You're going to cut down a four row planter ?! I wish I had a four row set up for corn and beans. On the Planet Jr front, I would keep an eye open for a few more 71s.

My stands of greens and radishes were so much better, I never went back. I'd used the Planet Jrs for the first 5 or 6 years. I am very sure that the increased productivity paid for the planters in a couple months.

I am not surprised that you are busy with business right now.

All our big plantings are done for the year. From here on out it is just a few rounds of cukes and zukes, and fall cabbage. We have been getting our share of rain. Looks like we have a tornado watch right now. The weed situation is not quite desperate, but a few dry days would be nice. The foxtail are going crazy. I think that I can still get through the tomatoes, and it would not hurt to clean up the beans, corn, peppers, eggplant, etc.

I paid $25.99 each for depth bands (pn AD10179) for 2" seeding depth on April 14th. You will need two for each row.

Mike, I hear there is an awsome machine shop in your area called Adna Ironworks.... Some speak highly of the guy, some just speak of him! He might be of some help. Good luck.

Yes, I have heard of this "tinman", this Adna Iron Works. Then again I have heard of the Sasquatch. Such a place could not exist. If it did I am sure the owner and bull goose loony would be putting bearings on the roller for my seeder and not parusing the internet in search of a hands off system of bail management. Yes, Im quite sure.

until tomorrow
