Hey doc you seem to know all about these yellow balers. I made 44 bales the other day with my 604J. The guage for the pressure isnt working but when i got done i checked it with a tire guage and it had 38 lbs. of pressure. It made a pretty good bale but think I may be able to do better. I was trying to make them about 5 foot high. Also it seemed to work better to stop the pto before trying to dump the bale otherwise the belts want to slip over the outer edge of the bale and knock the string off the outside also. What are your thoughts on this? thank you

Your baler has a pop-off valve setting of either 195 PSI or 205 PSI. If you want to make rock hard 5' bales you need 120 PSI starting pressure. 100 psi for 6' bales. If you want to make good bales you will need at least a starting pressure of 70 psi.
It is up to the operator if you want to turn the PTO off or not but if you are in hill country like we are. You will turn them off or build your and your neighbors fences because they will roll to the bottom of the hill. You do not rough up the outside of the bale as much if you stop the pto after tying the bale.

bigih9, Every round baler I've used works better if the pto is cut off when dumping the bale. Don't know about air pressure.

tsnellgrove, Have you checked twine tension? Also be sure the twine is threaded properly(Don't ask me how I know this). Possibly after the baler properly wraps one you could check and see if it is still threaded correctly.

Have you had problems with the string not feeding? About every third roll the string on our 604J stops with none hanging out the end, and so it won"t feed the next time. Then you have to lay down in the hayfield and rethread the string. Other than that it seems to basicaly work.

There is a little brush that goes in your twine tube. Part # 93412001 $ 1.97 Vermeer List. This will stop your twine from coming out of the twine tube.

No, I havent had that problem. Did sharpen the knife up with a file as it wasnt cutting the twine. Worked good after that. What do you run for pressure on yours and do you stop the pto when ejecting a bale?

We were running 50psi starting pressure, may need to increase it. Stopping the PTO seems to work the best for us too. I finally found that in the operators manual. Vermeer will send you a manual for free if you did not know that allready.

Hay Dr, thanks for the info, sounds like just what we need.
