Some very smart feller on this site told me a few months ago that this baler needs a clump of hay to make it start...that it will not start when the rows are too small.

I want to thank him/her for that because it saved me a whole lot of heartache.

Concerning the Vermeer F,G&H balers there are 3 adjustment that are critical to easier starting.
1. If you see the cords on the starter roller flapper belting replace them they are worn out.
2. The pick up teeth need to be adjusted to within 1/8" of hitting the flappers. Replace broken teeth.
3. Clean the chaff out of your tension springs and lace all the belts to the same length. If the belts are 2-3 short that is ok but you need to be able to push the belts in about 4-6" on the back of the baler when empty. If the belts creep along when the baler is empty you have the proper start tension. If they start off quickly like you were spinning your tire the start tension is too tight and you will have hard starting problems.

well most vermeer balers wont start with a large wind row.learned long ago with a 605c (closed throat)BIG WIND ROWS...grass hay.got a 605f will pick up fluff in corners.now running a605 SJ still want wind row as wide as gathering wheels.3 or 4 trips with side delivery rake or folling a 10 wheel V rake.gets her done.C baler will give to any one who wants it (still works).the weave sucks, wide wind rows make a good square bale....
personal side i think the air bags beat the springs on tension any day.

We have a C at our shop right now, trying to get rid of it. I'm ready to take the torch to it. As far as I'm concerned the air bags were one of the biggest mistakes they every made. They fixed everything when they came out with the M baler. They went bak to hydraulic and spring tension. It's by far the best baler I have ever seen.

As for proper windrow width, you either want a windrow the full width of the chamber or half the width of the chamber.

The Vermeer C balers with some TLC and dry hay will still bale hay. Vermeer made almost 25,000 C balers. The C's have some value to customers with a small tractor. We have run 504C balers back then with a 28 HP tractor. Those 604J & 605J balers will take hay as fast as the tractor can travel. They still are amazing and will make a tight bale of hay.
The M baler is a new concept for Vermeer with a radically new bale chamber and way the bale is formed. I personally do not like the extra wide pick-up concept on a 5' wide baler. It really only benefits the haylage operator on the 4' wide balers. It is hard to beat the Vermeer Hay-Saver Wheels and their standard pick-up.
