Dang it!!! to darn busy at work. Only way I am going to get done is to round em all up and figure a way to square them when I have more time.
Any good ideas for un rollers around?

I had a pretty good system worked out on unrolling. Still may if I wind up out of a 'day job'. I tried unrolling on the ground, using a power unroller, etc. Best thing I had come up with as an old NH manure spreader, PTO driven, that I used as a live floor to unroll off a spear, then feed that into the bale chamber. My long range plan was to put an electric motor on the baler with a dust collecter. I needed to mist the hay to rebale, and to fluff it (thats what I gained out of the manure spreader. Its value added agriculture at its best. Take a $25 round bale, make it into $40 worth of squares, do 6 an hour at an hourly cost of about $50. I'll work for $40 an hour.

I stopped in at the local welder. He has done alot of stuff for me. He knows how crazy I am.

We talked about what I wanted to do and he is going to put his mind to it and see what he can come up with.

I saw one on ebay that I thought was kind of niffty. it had a curved floor pan that could be raised with hydralics to force the bale aganst 2 steel rollers with teeth on them. The bottom roller turned slower than the top one. Ran from a hydralic motor.

Welder said he could use a hydralic motor off a old combine and maybe hook me up for around $1500.

if he can I am gona do it.

Try not to kill yourself by doing too much. I had to take the theory that if it didn't get done that was maybe not the best plan but it was OK. If hay got rained on you only lost what you put into it. Make sure you have enough for your own use and the rest is just gravy if you can get it.

Kelly C; Welcome to the real world of hay making. Plus all the running around you are trying to do on those little patches will get old in a hurry. those don't pay out been there done that. I been doing the unrolling thing for few years when I have to get it up sooner. You will find out though that just unrolling, will not rebale the best especilyy into the old 14t. It will be widder than the pickup and it will slug it. rolling down the hill theory will work little bit but you will find out its not the answer. To unroll the tighter bales it must have resistance against the bale to keep tearing it loose. The core can sometimes still be 2ft in diameter. Unless you shed the large rounds you will lose the eye appeal because of all the outside spoilage. I do this and have been for few years when I have to and bales need to be net wrapped thast makes alot of difference in quality. Grass hay really don't lose that much but if doing 2nd cut alfalfa you need a pan chute at the unroller. You can get a very good unroller $5200.00 and go. The rotating 3pt spike type unless someone else walks along side with pitch fork it will not come apart like you think. I am still building and modifying my unroller getting alot closer to a slick set up. It must unroll it and tear it apart some and it works alot nicer if change dirrection of feed it chamber. Good Luck Working full time and haying is avery tough combination to get to pay out. Seen it many times. You will find out even rolling it in your situation will still be tough. It will be hard to keep custom customers also cause they won't wait that long. Been there done all you trying to do. Have example here he tries do same as you,he finally got first cut up rained on several times,he rolled it they still setting in the same field, second cut is past full bloom starting turn color with the bales still laying there. You would be better off having it rolled then you would at least have a sellable product. $9.50 rolled and wrapped is what I do when need to. usuaslly running same time because I know what I can square and if rain is coming he rolls it too that way it is all off the ground. I am already sold out that my biggest problem last few years and orders are for 3rd cut. Not critiziing what you are doing, you are just learning the real facts about it. As the saying goes don't quit your day job.

I unroll them by hand down a small hill to feed , dont take much . I seen a guy that put a roller of sorts on the front of a tractor to unroll`em but you would be driving on the hay . Get them going in the right direction and it dont take alot to unroll like I say a small hill helps .

In Farm Show magazine there was a guy that makes unrollers out of combine final drives. He makes them into a 3-point mounting. Couples a hydraulic motor to the drive stub shaft.

Kelly,
Let me get this right, your going to bale em round and then later make squares out of them? Seems like a waste of fuel to me.

Another note. I just lost about $1000 tonight.
I couldnt cut last Thursday night as I didnt get home untill 7:30. Cut about 400 bales worth on Friday night. Figured to bale Sunday eve.
Sunday that stuff just would not dry enough to bale. Humidity was high all weekend. SO I waited untill after work on Monday. Guess what? Started raining hard just as I drove in the drive way at 6 pm.
I still have about 50 acres to get in. 400 bales every 2nd good weekend is not going to get er done.
Need to be able to put the hammer down when its dry. Rounding is the only way to get that.

Look at it this way. You can't lose what you never had, so you didn't lose $1000. you also can't be two places at once.

It is a workable idea. I have read of several operations that roll it up get it in the dry and later in the winter bale small squares as the orders for them come in.

That is a lot of hay to do around a full time job. I've done it but I flamed all my vacation time doing it. All so I could feed my beef cows. After about fifteen years of that I got rid of the cows. The old timers put hay in the barn loose then a guy with a press came around in the winter and they pressed it into square bales and shipped it on the railroad. They had a lot of time on their hands in the winter that we don't have. I've seen it done at an old ways days. A lot of work.

I had my baler go down on me with 10 tons to go with rain coming in I decided to put up several good old fashioned haystacks. I will bale them later. I really don't like feeding a baler with a pitchfork but it is better than losing some real good hay in perfect condition.
