JD 483 moco

Does anybody know anything about the JD 483 or 485 mower conditioners? I called about one today, Any major problems, wobble box? How well does the big solid reel work, doesn't it block your view to the crusher/ crimper? What would one plus a spare for parts be worth?

I have a 480 (which is almost exactly like a 483) that I've been using for four years now. I paid $150 for it, and put $300 into fixing it up (including 2 new tires). It does a good job for me, and is very simple to operate and work on. The one weak spot was the splined coupler. Mine broke, but I found in a junkyard JD's replacement, which had a shear bolt - that was $70 of the $300. Overall, it's a big step up from a sickle bar mower. The only other problem I've had is the reel drive chain broke once - it does seem undersized, which probably doesn't help the 480's reputation.

A little friendly advice from someone who bleeds green.Stay away as far as you can get from those 2 Deere moco models.Don't go any farther back than a 1207 or 1209 or better yet,look for a New Holland.I have an old NH 488 that I wouldn't trade for 13 483s.

msb,I remember delivering those cutters when they were new.JD should have recalled all of them.You wouldn't get far in field before pieces would start flying.Tx Jim
