My father bought a number 9 sickle mower and we have been trying to get it to work on his 530 jd. So far not much luck. Does anyone have a good adjustment procudere they could share? Just some general information would be good. I have a several questions as well.

1. How high should you be able to lift the mower while the pto is engaged - say if you want to jump over a stump.

2. Should you use a solid third link or a chain. With a solid third link it seems to bind.

3. Was this mower designed for a tractor like the 530 or does it work better with the newer 10 and 20 series hitches?

4. When the sickle is on the ground should the lifting spring be relaxed or streched out? If streched out then how much?

5. Is this mainly a mower for cutting hay or should it work well for pond dams and rougher country as well?

Do you have the special brackets to clamp the mower to the draft links on the three point? Solid upper link for sure. If you get the manual which is sold on Ebay frequently ( and inexpensively), you will see just how to attach it. I can possibly fax some pictures to you.

Do you have the correct brackets. There are two different sets depending upon which 3 point arms a tractor hasYou need the brackets that have the square notches (not rounded)in them.As a rule the center link will have to be extended pretty far out.If properly mounted,it won't matter how high you raise the mower,it will still cut.You will want to set your three point hitch stop to where the spring is carrying most of the cutterbar weight.Enough so the cutterbar won't drag hard on the ground and drag up hay.Be very careful when mowing across deep ditches. The housing tends to grenade in real tight dips.Been there, done that. And I really, really liked that mower.lol, bob
