Bush Hog driveshaft bent?

I"ve got an old pull type Bush Hog, model 306 that I"m running off a 50hp Ford. Early after purchasing the bush hog I noticed the shaft making noise when I pull anything tighter than a 20ft turn, figured that was the practical limit and went on. This summer when I finally bit the bullet and pulled out the old beast to mow, I decided to clean and grease everything I could get to. When I got around to pulling the driveshaft apart I noticed the inner square half was bent visably, and the round outer half was bent enough that rolling it across the garage floor would produce a little hop at evey turn.

I"m having trouble finding info or options for remedy. I"m a little cheap, but at the same time I"m not interested in any kind of PTO related accident.

Any suggestions?

The rotart cutter I'm familiar with have a proceedure to check and make sure that the drive shaft is the correct length for the 3 pt hitch that it is mounted on. If the shaft is too long, it can bind the hitch up and possibly bend the shaft. That may be what happened to your. Get a manual from Bush Hog(see their website). Maybe you can get it starightened and then shorten it for your application. You should also use stabilizers on your three point to cut out the sway on three point mounted equipment.

Because of my own stupidity, I've bent the shaft on my tedder not once, but twice. First time I bought a new one for close to $200...second time I took it to a machine shop and he straightened it for $20.

I took the shaft into the shop yesterday afternoon and when they pulled it apart we found the square inner bar was rounded badly on 1 corner, apparently it had been run out of balance for some time. I asked about cutting that portion off, but he indicated shaft was at its maximum safe extension limit. Combined with 2 bad U joints and one seriously chewed up female coupling we decided there wasn"t mutch to salvage from that unit.

When I pulled off the slip clutch it was pretty bad off too. Most of the teeth on the male and female sides of the clutch were stripped about 60%. DOA number 2!

As luck would have it the only two surfaces in reasonable shape were the pto shaft coming out of the tractor and the shaft coming out of the gearbox on the hog. They both fit pretty tightly on the only good disconnect I have.

Thanks for all your help.
