My old NH 66 has just started to break flywheel shear bolts, and I've checked all the "common" problems and baled a few dozen bales turning the flywheel by hand to find out the problem. I can see what is happening, but don't know why.

Every few bales (no pattern) when the plunger pushes enough hay to sort of barely trip the knotter mechanism, the needles kind of "fall" a couple inches toward the bale chamber and the emergency stop trips. The needles never enter the bale chamber, but are no longer locked into place. The next plunger stroke, the knotter doesn't start to tie and the plunger hits the emergency stop.

Doesn't happen every time, but often enough that it is irritating. I'll get 1-6 bales without problem, and then it'll shear.

Any ideas of what to check? I've checked baling tension, knife alignment, and the yoke and knotter brakes. What now??

thanks,
Tom A

Knotter brake is the problem.

Like Jim say...its the brake. The brake's job is to keep the needles from bouncing out of place.
