Is it time to cut again?

I looked at my hay field today, the alfalfa is about 12-16" high and half of the aflalfa is allready flowering. The majority of the field (70-80%) is grass mixture that is only 8-10" high. I baled the first cutting around the 8th of June. The last week and half have been pretty dry, little rain Sat. morning. Should I be getting my equipment ready now or should I hold off another week. Thanks for any help. Rich

cut it,simple as that. yes you will put windrows toegether depend on what you have for equipment and crop. I just got done putting 5 together. I run large windrows always if possible. You might want to look into a bale basket wagon in your case also. I ran them several years and loved them before going to grapple system. RickL

I'm hoping I can cut later this week, forecasting good chance of rain everyday till Thurs. Have to wait and see, I guess. I'm leaning toward the drag type bale accumulators.

thats fine go for it, I just didn't want them drug all over and I wanted to work on edge. If you have any sand they can be really awful to work with being drug all throu sandburs. but like i have always said if it works for you then thats all that matters

You guys are ready for your second cutting and it's not stopped raining here long enough to even start. A couple guys got some small fields round baled in May. Since then the longest dry stretch has been 2 days and about 70 degrees. I'm all hooked up and ready. Right this minute it's raining hard--weather man says it's going to get nice on Tuesday. He's right about 10% of the time. Hope this is one of them! Ahh, the wonderful northwest..

I was out there last weekend, didn't see any flowers then, what a differance a week makes. I was hoping it would grow a bit more, but I guess I'll be cutting this coming week.

Thanks to all for repling, I was hoping I would have my new tractor (Oliver 1650) and moco before the 2nd cutting came around. Oh well, It's suppose to rain the first few days this next week, I'll have to wait till at least next Wednesday to start. I'll have to double up all the windrows this time. Thanks again.

Get it now,Its ready,and if you have any bit of moisture left,it will get a start at growing back and maybe survive until you get a shower.

I say get er done. I'll be lucky to get any second cutting here in Northcentral PA if we don't start to get some rain. Corn is starting to roll a bit and oats look to be short.

Protein level is highest before it starts flowering, and it goes downhill from there. Growth pretty well stops- sometimes we think it should grow higher before cutting, but weather conditions dictate differently. Lack of water makes for an early cut.
