Square baler choices?

What would be an economical choice for a square baler to do just a few hundred a year? Prefer JD or NH for parts availability. Thanks.

Assuming you have a tractor of 35 or more hp & preferably with live pto, any of ther JD balers starting with the 14T & 24T; and any of the New Holland balers starting with 69 model & through the 271 model will work fine if you find a good one. Many of these models have some parts interchange (within color), work well, & should be able to get parts easily from any dealer.

I am partial to NH, I have a 270 that has run forever, but JD seems pretty good too.

You can get newer balers from each, perhaps you would want a bit more hp for some of them....

I would think longer about getting a NH baler that is older & has the wad-board system. While the baler works, it is a bit more hassle at times....

If you have a very marginal tractor (the ever popular Ford N, etc.....) then you would want to stay with the lowest capacity balers of these models, and consider one with an engine on the baler. If your tractor can handle a baler, do _not_ mess with another engine on the baler....

I've got a NH 66 that I picked up for $140. I put another $30 or so into it for magneto parts (it has an old Wisconsin engine on it) and it bales my 500 a year without hassle or problems...same knotters as most NH's, so probably the 66 or anything newer that you can get economically.

Tom,

I have had exceptional luck with my little 270 New Holland. Bought it for $300 and spent about $700 in parts for the rebuild. Looks and runs like new and is a joy to bale with. Makes nice square bales and rarely misses a knot.

I recently bought a 336 Deere because I need a thrower. Going through it now and have spent a lot more in parts and have spent much more time on it as well. I hope it turns out to be half as good as the 270!

I picked up a JD 14T baler last spring for $750. Works good now, loosened up the tension WAY to much after I got it. I got the JD because there are 2 dealerships within 15 miles of me, not sure where the closest NH dealer is. You can pick up a older used baler pretty cheap, just get a manual and a lot of patience.

Think the parts availability as well as model of choice is regional. In my are there are far more NH balers than JD. Most guys on this board seem to use the 14X16 balers. In may are of the country it is mostly the bigger ones. Look around to see what is available. If you are only doing that many bales it might pay to hire a neighbor to do it. The thing with a baler or swather is you have to have it in good shape to work well whether doing a few bales or many. Sometimes I think I spend 1/2 the time in the field that I do in the shop.

Theres a number of good old JD balers the 14-T the 24-T are just a couple of the old ones made from around 1956 up to around 1962. Biggest thing to look for is how good or bad the knotters are. You can still get the books for them from JD also
