Was baleing today and ran out of gas in the S88 oliver. Looked back at the 850 baler and noticed that the upper bale chain idler on the right side was smokeing. Looked it over and it seems that the bearing in it has gone bad. How hard are they to replace and how do you do it?? The manual I have doesn't have any thing about it. Thanks for your help.

I have an 851 and have had to replace a couple of those bearings in the past. I would loosen the apron chain all the way on both sides with the stop bolts. I think by raising the tailgate slightly and putting a 4 inch by 4 inch by 8 foot blocking timber above the cylinders for safety and then letting the tailgate back down to just rest on the timber, will take a little more pressure of of the apron chain. Then by pulling on an apron bar with a come-a-long above the ruined bearing... maybe hooked from a loader bucket or something else you can use over head for support, this will give you enough room to get the new bearing/sprocket in there. If its. the back/top sprocket you maybe able to just use a crow bar and maybe a block on that cross memeber in there to raise it enough. I just remember it isn't the easiest job in the world because that apron chain is very heavy. Good luck !

It the one at the very top, I was hopeing I would have to loosen up the springs but guess I'll probably have to. Oh well I need to get it fixed apap since I have hay down and need to get it baled before it gose bad. Guess I'll be baleing some real dry hay.

that happened on our old 851, if it"s the same one i"m thinking of all we did was take it apart then to put it back together we used a bar to pry up the chain. My dad and I did it in maybe 15 minutes. Hope this helps...
