Simple hydraulic question

I've enjoyed the 2 months of owning my 53 Ford Golden Jubilee. I've installed a remote hydraulic set-up and plan on re-installing the front end loader that came with it. (This is a dual hydraulic ram set-up. The rams are one-way. The bucket is a trip bucket.)

I was wondering...Do I need to 'bleed' the hydraulics? The only previous exposure to hydraulics I've had is with cars.

The return line mentioned in the earlier post will not bleed the air from anything beyond the control valve. Air can still be in the lines to the cylinders. Sometimes the air will work itself out. If the loader seems springy when you lift some weight, it needs to be bled. Crakc the lines loose whit the cylinders retracted and move the lever slightly to lift.

Paul, I hope your system included the reservoir because as you are aware this is an open system. Being open (atmospheric) is what allows it to bleed its self. Good luck and enjoy...

Bob,

I did the adapter plate mod and am using the internal hydraulics. I have a pressure side line coming off the right side test port. It goes to my open center control valve. Returns to the modified adapter plate.

I tested the remote hydraulic system with it completely set-up. (But, the loader isn"t attached to the cylinders yet.) My 3 pt. lift arms work as well as ever. The loader hydraulic cylinders that had sat for many years took a little time but they eventually popped free and extended. I"m guessing that the delay in extension could have been due to the system working the air out first. It also could be due to the rams sticking from the years of inactivity. Nonetheless, I"ll add the loader tomorrow and do multiple raise/lower cycles and see if I can get the cylinders to operate more easily.

Tractor hydraulics do not require bleeding as there is a line back to dump, (it is not a closed circuit) what i would say is, once you have the loader conected, fully lift and lower it a few times to remove any air from the system before lifting any wieght with it.
