I have an old 46 ih baler that like most of you i have played with cussed and so on. Anywho this is what i have found out about the old baler. I have adjusted the twine knife to were it cuts the twine completely and keep them real sharp. And also adjusted the twine bill tension. I have baled about 525 bales and it missed 13 bales most of them before i made the adjustments. Also if the twine bills are woren out it will not make the proper knott. The thing with getting the twine knife set right is that if a little peice of the twine is not cut it will untie the knott off the knotter just like your shoe strings. Now this is what has sent a many of the balers to their grave. Also i run the baler at somewhere between 55 and 60 strokes per minute and have good luck with it.Also if you are having the twine pull out of twine holders there is a very thin shim to be removed to help with this problem. I have seen some of you use 7200 twine all this does is make it more dificult for the knife to cut it. I use 9000 sisal and have no problems with it. Don,t like plastic to much mice and rat problems. To adjust the twine knifes place a small washer between the knife and the holder i have 3 top and bottom on mine one side the other side i have three on top and two on the bottom. Doesn,t make any sense but what the heck goverment doesn,t either. Have a great day.

Delbert,
Good observations. You are right all the way around. I have the IH 27 baler which is smaller than the 46, but has the same knotters. I bought the replacement knive that have the inserts and they do work a lot better than the old one's. I also run my baler at about 60 strokes per minute with my old M. The only time I have trouble with tieing is when I run into a window that has large clumps of hay in them. Without live PTO I have to kit it out of gear so I don't slug it. If I get too big of slug going in the knot gets stripped off the twine bill too fast and the loop is pulled through and unties.
