Does anyone out there use a small square bale accumulator?? If so do you use one that drags the bales on the ground? Does that work well?

Any pictures of these accumulators and grapples? They are unheard of around here. On rare occasions stooks of 5 bales are still seen around here.

Kind of figures. I lived for two years about 1-1/2 hours from Hastings. And I must have drove past the Erin dealership last Tuesday. A rather clever system. That transporter only takes barely 1/2 a load of hay at a time however. I wonder if there is something larger on the drawing board? How well does the accumulator work on hilly fields? I've seen those bale banders on this site but the price was a fright. Wonder how the netherexe system prices out for an accumulator, transporter and grapple? We have a long reach flat rack with back rack that will take bales six long and 2-1/2 wide. May as well grapple stack it for loads that get elevated into the mow of a bank barn. I was never too fussy for trying to get all the strings cut off round bales. The big squares have thier appeal if set up the system from scratch. I do plan on selling truckloads or freight containers of hay in the future.

I bought a used Netherexe system this spring from a dealer. He was getting a 12 bale model for himself. New 8 bale systems run just over $8000.00. I can't say enough good about the system. Problems? I have found out that if you have bales in the accumulator and have to travel any distance to another field you had better drop your partial load b4 moving as the strings will not stand to be drug too far. Other than that, I have not seen any damage to any of the bales or in the alfalfa stubble from dragging the bales. Also, I have limited space for stacking so the first layer I stack on edge by hand, that keeps the stack straight and true. The first stack I made 12 bales high put so much pressure on the bottom layer it broke strings. I had to restack it.

Rob , try a search under Bale bunchers. UNIMOG has some great pictures of his. Mine is almost the same, and works really well for the few bales that i do. My father in law used to do 50000 bales a year, back in the 60-70's with it. Six to ten bales in a group, in a line across the field, makes pickup a lot faster. Cost;400-600$ at local welding shop.

I have an older Farmhand 8 bale accumulator that I use and like very much. Its the only way Im able to bale, pick up and stack in the barn by myself. They can be somewhat touchy but if your baler is consistent (a must) and the accumulator is set right they are great. If your baler bales misshapen or misses a lot of ties forget it, it will drive you nuts. I normally pull 2 wagons to the field that will hold 96 bales each with the pickup tractor, drop them and load them. Generally it takes about 15 minutes to load each. I pull them back to the barn , unload them and stack in the barn. Takes a little longer to off load as the design of my barn requires some be placed by hand. I do NOT have to lift any just move them into place.I can normally rake, bale, pickup, and stack in the barn 3-400 bales a day depending on how far it is from field to barn & I'm 60+ yrs old. I also have a NH 1012 bale wagon. The bale wagon is great for picking up bales but if your not stacking outside you still have a handling problem. Anyone who thinks they can use a set of bale forks with a bale wagon is in for bitter disappointment. I've tried it. I wish it had.

Rob, I've been thinking about those accumulators myself. I'm leaning towards the drag type, mainly because they are a tad cheaper, and there are no hydraulics or electronis to go bad. couple people I've talked to have said sliding the bales on the ground doesn't effect them as much as you'd think. Doesn't get the bales dirty, and works real well in grass (slides easier). One side note, did you buy a couple bales from me, down by De Soto, just wondering how everything is going and if you got the manuals.

Rich:

Yeah that was me. I got the manuals, thanks a lot. I haven't done a thing with the balers yet, I was gone from home for a week on business following that Sat. I bought the balers. Took me an hour and a half to get home.....two balers tend to whip a bit going down hill...

We used a Farmhand accumulator (trailer type hooked to NH baler) and F-11 loader with grapple on our 4010D. Our bales of alfalfa ran 90-110lbs, so it sure beat picking up every bale by hand in the field and stacking by hand in the barns! Bales have to be uniform and accumulator timed correctly or you have a mess.

I use a Hoelscher system, and would not go back, if you get them figure out corrrectly ans if baler will make uniform bales they are nice. I have used grapple for 1500.00 and one for 900.00 bothe good units pickupo 10 on edge or eight flat. I didn't like the ground drag style

Thanks Rick,

I have talked to one person who has used the drag on ground type, he is very enthusiastic about them, but I am like you, I am uneasy abouty dragging 8 good bales on the ground. I appreciate the offer on the equipment, but I am mainly looking for the accumulator.

i was just letting know what I had right now available. the hoelschers can be a headache if you don't get them set right, but I change few things on mine now it works slick.I also like handling every thing on edge, just personal preference. Give me a ring I wiil tell you the mods I did to my unit. Where are you located at. 319-257-6764

Rick:

I am over in SW Iowa just west of Creston. I have been thinking about on edge vs flat. My main concern was how well the bales stay hooked in the grapple. When I used the farmhand years ago we got along great running them flat. 641-344-5688

I get along fine with them on edge, I actually can do either with the grapple eight flat or ten on edge. I also pickup 1 ,2 3 any amount I need. It has not been a problem for me at all. I actually find they ride better since you are stacking ruogh sdes aagainst each other. I use the old donahue implement trailers for my wagons. 44 bales to layer and go six high. Sometimes I have to back off litle due to weight odf bales in hay. I trie stay 50lbs or just under thats what all my customers want,90% are women. Haveing trouble doing that with current baler usually running 70lbs plus still working on that. The accumulator like I SAID BEFORE IT HAS TO BE SET RIGHT or by the 3rd bale you are screwed. thwe bale wagons are an option,I have to manyhills and to far to travel for the small loads they handled,in my situation I cut andbalein sections so Can get it all baled quality and appearence is main goal. The grapple give you alot more versatility, load, unload, load customers, etc. i have even done a 60 acre field with egder on back baler so they dropped on edge then just went down the windrow of bales with grapple and picked them upgathering till had ten, never stopped moving once you learn. give me a call if want more help. I have loaded, hog trailers, car traiers, pickup beds, semi van trailers, etc etc with the grapple, do it every week on pickup, trailer.

I thought about one of those accumulators that drad the bales on the ground since I could not afford a Hoelsher. I did not like the idea of draging good bales on th ground. Instead I found a NH 1010 bales wagon in good shape for $700. It was one of my best buys. Now I plan on finding a grapple to dissaseble the stacks. Beats driving all around the feild to pick up piles of 8 bales.

I've got a Steffens accumulator. It carries the bales on a "rack". It works WONDERFUL, provided your baler makes all the bales the exact same size.

I wouldn't part with it for love nor money....

Thanks Indy,

The cost of these things is what is holding we back, 11500 for a hoelscher accumulator and grapple, somewhat less for some others. I used a farmhand system 12-15 yrs ago that carried the bales on a cart, it worked great, but once again cost is raising its ugly head.
