I want to buy a round baler but don't want to buy one that my tractor can't handle. What round balers if there any are people using with a tractor that has 45-50 HP. Thanks for all your help. I am in Central WI if anyone has one to sell.
Thanks,
Dennis

I pull a 504 Super I with a 62hp Ford 5600, it does good on fairly level land, but it pulls it down pretty hard when I am bailing on hills, I have to drop down to 3rd gear and even to 2nd on some of the steeper hills, you just have to slow down. When I get another tractor to bail with it will be a 75-85 hp J Pearson.

I owned a Hesston 530? made 4x4 bale and also borrowed my brothers case IH 8420 same size and ran them with MF65 gas on some hilly land in eastern ohio and had plenty of power only thing the hydraulics to rise end gate was slow but made real nice bales

Let me give you a little more information. I have a small hobby farm and would normally make around 1500 small sqare bales. My helpers have grown up and are for the most not around. I need to look at a round baler or getting rid of the animals. I have an older Case 401 Super Diesel. The ground is level and a grass mix. I don't need a new baler just something to make a few round bales.
Thanks for all the comments
Dennis

If you're getting a small one, I'd go for the 4X4 (46" by 46" or similar) such as John Deere 330 as opposed to the 39" by 54" such as Hesston 530 or CaseIH 8420, especially if you are baling pastures and not hayfields. Unless you keep your cows out until you get the bales moved, they'll stand 'em all on end for you. The 46" by 46" bales also stack easier.

Personally like the Vermeer 5400 Rebel. I have one. In a pinch, I hooked it to a 34HP tractor for a few acres. It was a work-out, but it got the job done. I NORMALLY use it behind a 60HP 6500LB tractor. Very high quality piece.

Flat lander, rolling hills or steep grades? Clay, loam or sandy soil? Soil dry, ideal or wet boggy spots? Type of hay, grasses or clover/alfalfa. 2WD or 4WD tractor? Radial or bias tires? Do like to push equipment to it's limit and beyond or operate within manufactures recomendations? What brand of baler, some drive harder and weight more than others. Are you rolling bales as tight as possible or modest? Applying wrap or just twine?

Make sure you are talking about PTO HP of your tractor. In New Balers the Vermeer 5400(5x4) requires 40 PTO HP, NH BR730(4x4) requires 40 HP, Hesston 730(40"x52")- 30 HP, Hesston 740(4'x4')40 HP, Hesston 745(5x4)45 HP,also available in other AGCO marketing brands.
JD447(4x4)45 HP

Looks like Vermeer learned that fat belts on the outside makes for a flat roll (cylindrical, not barrel shaped). Very nice.

Ought to be good to go with a 4x4 or 4x5. Bigger than that and you are stretching it. I just sole a 5x6 to a guy with a NEW NH 60 hp and it handled it ok on level ground and only rolled to 5x5.5; but it was a huffin and puffin.

I ran a NH 855 behind a JD 5400 here in Cecil County MD, but the JD 5500 will handle it better.

Looked at a Case/IH 3450 and it rolled 4x4's on 40 hp I think.

I used to pull my hesston 5530 witha JD 830 (newer 3cyl) when I had and it worked it but got the job done. I pulled my vermeer 605xl most all of last summer with a JD 2550 she would moan and groan when the bale started getting above 65" but I got by. Now I have the matching McCormick to go with it. Most any 4x4 or 4x5 and you will do fine....Jim
