Thanks to all for the help on getting the NH 68 plunger problem solved. It was just stuck from rusting. The wood blocks are really thick and it appaers that the machine has been used very little. The new problem is with the left side knotter. When it ties it leaves the knot hung up in the finger. Does anyone have any ideas on a cure for this?

If the baler has been sitting a long time, the easiest answer might just be rust. If the underneath of the billhook isn't shiny-smooth, the friction will keep the knot from slipping off. Try a little bit of very fine sandpaper and polish it up and try again. Mine also got lots better after I installed new twine...was using some old stuff left in the baler when I bought it, and replacing it made a big difference (I think maybe it attracts moisture and won't slide so easily).

good luck,
Tom A

Thanks for the advise. I turned the knotters up and compared them. They were both bright and shiny, but when I looked closer I found the problem. There is this flat spring type piece of steel that puts tension on the string holder and the one that was holding the knots was broken. I replaced it and it works fine. I am now a baler expert, Ha.Ha! What I have discovered is that the knotters on NH balers haven't really changed, so parts aren't a problem if you find a donor.

somebody posted here about a price change at New Holland on replacement knotters, maybe a mistake. At any rate, they sold complete knotters for a short period of time for some ridiculously low price, like $50 or $80 bucks. I bought two, used one to rebuild one of my troublesome knotters on the NH 66. The knotters were so close, I only had to finagle one little thing to make it work just fine.

Glad you found the problem!
