Just wondering - I recently found out that square balers will damage your tractor. Know a guy who says that he's gonna get a RotoBaler to pull behind his 30HP Hydrostat Korean tractor. His main reason is that the plunger action of a square baler will tear up his tractor (read about it on the internet). Don't know - seen many a "H", or JD A, or 8N put up 1000's of bales. Neighbor has a PTO drive NH 273 he has pulled around with an 8N for 20 years. Any thoughts?

Your kinda compareing apples to oranges.

Compacts were "never" designed to be an ag farm tractor to bale hay with. The old tractors were. Companies like Kubota build there "M" series for farm ag tractors to bale with, so buy one of those if you want an ag tractor.

Use the compact for what it was designed for and it will hold up just fine. Baleing hay just wasn't one of the things it should be doing.

His toy tractor may not be able to take it. I took out the PTO clutch on a MF265 a few years ago running a NH 570 baler. I do run it to capacity. He needs an older better tractor or a bigger one. What tractor and Baler do you have?

41 IH "M", 49 8N, 59 IH 460. Bale with the neighbors NH 273. Even the 8N runs it fine. Just wondering about a yuppie tractor (a 30 HP Kioti brand in this case). He paid $23,000 for the thing - I'd give $500 for it, no questions asked. Thing is made outta tin foil & plastic - basicly an overgrown lawn mower. Not thinking of buying one - I'd get a real tractor. He's just on the Rotobaler kick because he said square balers will tear up a tractor. Guess if he had a real one, he'd not have to worry about it.

It will tear his up for sure. But not real ones like you and I do. Baler is farm equipment not a toy like his glorified lawn mower

The compact imports do not have the overbuilt, heavy internal shafts & gears to handle the actions of a baler. The plunger will 'store' about 50 hp and use that to pack the wad of hay with the plunger. However, the baler only uses about 15 hp to run, the 50 hp is a peak demand, tractor supplies a constant 15 hp to keep the flywheel energized.

So, the lightly built newer tractors cannot handle the 'feedback' from the 50 hp stored energy & the peak demands of a square baler.

Old tractors were built much heavier in the rear end, no problems.

Many of the compact tractor warrenties explain this, check the fine print. The larger compacts are sometimes ok with it.

Dad bought a 24T new in 1968. We pull it with a 60 JD and bale around 6000 bales a year. Not one problem with the baler or the tractor

It sounds like your buddy has bought a Kioti CK-30 HST model. They are pretty small/light to be dragging a baler with but could do an old small capacity baler.

Despite what some people on the internet think you don't need a brand new 100 hp cabbed machine to make a couple of hundred small squares.

His machine would be fun to toot around and make a few bales on for fun. Probably won't brake anything and if so Kioti parts are pretty cheap. The electric engage pto is the scary party, I don't know if that model has a main dry clutch too so you can feather the pto load.

We are putting a little 50 hp kubota to work baling this year. An aquaintence does 4 cuts of 80 acres of his own and some of his partners 120 acres with the same kubota model. The land is in Michigan and is heavily fertilized for maximum production. He pulls a JD336 with thrower and wagon and also pulls a brand new NH 4x4 rounder.

The rounder is pretty easy on stuff, he said the first year he loaded some of the bales too tight and broke some overload shear pins in the baler. Tractor had no trouble spinning any of it.
