Spare baler knoves?

How many of you keep spare knives for the plunger on your square baler?

Mine have gotten dull, and I don't take time to sharpen once the baling season hits, but I think getting a spare might make me more inclined to keep it sharp. I can hear the plunger strain when I gobble some heavy windrows, and some of the bales aren't cut clean apart anymore.

Anybody have suggestions on a source for a NH 66 plunger knife?

Make sure when you check the gap between the blade you have the slack taken out of the bearings. Force them as close together (the knives) as possible before making your measurement.

If your bearing and rails are tight, you can adjust the knife gap with shims behind the knives.

Well the knives should go 10,000 bales no problem even 20,000 in the right conditions and work fine still. Make sure your knive gap is correct. It don't matter if your knives are sharp if your knive gap is too big. The gap should be around .010" to .030" between the 2 knives. Check your bearings and plunger rails for wear.

Typically I sharpen the knives and adjust the knive gap in the off season and then its trouble free for the summer.

Bought this thing very used from the original owner's son. They made a lot of bales in its first lifetime, and it doesn't look like the knives had ever been out or been sharpened.

You're right, the gap is way too big and I think I'll need to get new wooden guides too, besides just adjusting.

It should last several years between sharpenings, at least they did on our 66 and later on our IHC 46 and that was with 10-15,000 bale a year

I met this King once, who said he always liked to keep a few spare knaves around the palace.
