making 494 into a side dresser

I'm running 6 acres of organic corn this year. I didn't get the bottom spread with manure and it's showing. I'd like to side dress the corn with some Chilean Nitrate 16-0-0 (the only crap I can use) but don't have a side dresser on my cultivators. The one thing I do have is a junk 494 planter in the back of my father in laws shed. It has the fertilzer attachment and it looks to be in operational condition.

Has anyone ever heard of using an old planter to side dress fertilizer? If I don't find a genuine side dresser soon, my plan is to cut off the planter units and the tongue and make it 3-point. I'd keep the wheels on it and drop them instead of the planter to run it. I'll set the fertilizer drop tubes in the row beside the corn. This way, the fertilizer won't get into the whorl and ruin the plant.

It's not my best solution but would it work?

Easiest way to do this is the following: Take off planter units, frames and all. Take off markers. Leave fertilizer openers on, but set them to run next to your rows instead of on them. Set the left two so they are inside the row towards the tractor, the the right two so they are inside the row towards the tractor.
Standing behind planter-
Left side (Row/opener, Row/opener, opener/Row, opener/Row) Right side
Should track OK on its transport, no need to cut the hitch off and put it on 3-point. You can even add a couple of cultivator tines to each row to cover fertilizer.

I would prefer to do that but the corn in question is already 10 inches tall. I estimate the frame would be 8 inches off the ground if I used it as is. By putting it on the 3 point, I hope to be able to just drop it from 24 inches on top of the ground and follow with my cultivator.

Like I said, not the best solution but the quickest one... :( I was also thinking about finding 4 gandy boxes and mounting them on the cultivator. I'd be refilling a lot but it'd get to where it's needed.

How successful are these units you have seen?

Hmmm, the height is a problem. I"ve seen a couple conversions like I described, seemed to work OK, but I wonder what if your rows are curved from following a terrace, will the unit drift too much? One year, I just broadcast over the rows with the 3-point spinner and then cultivated. Better than nothing!
