Rates for haybining

What is the going rate for haybining in your area?. I don't do much custom work but a friend asked me to cut some hay for him. Its about 9 miles from my farm, I believe twelve acres. I was thinking $12 an acre..is that a reasonable ball park rate? Mike in Exeter Ontario

Here are the Wisconsin rates for that question. You will see that there are many other stats offered as well. The USDA website will also link you off to other states as well. Wisconsin seems to do a rather good job of complining these sort of statistics, other states may vary.

Disc M0CO $11-$12 acre
raking $5 acre bifold rake
Round Baling up to 6x5 $11 per bale w/ net

Mow, rake,bale $15 per bale

This is what I have been charging this year.

just paid 17.00 per bale for the big round bales(cut, rained on 4 times, raked, and baled) and they were so lose they sagged pretty good and were hard to pick up. now gotta come up with a haystack cover to protect the hay. looks as if i'm needing to invest in my own equipment.

That rate sounds good, but tell him if you find too many rocks (or other obsticals)he's helping foot the bill. Also get it in writting.

Why do they want you to cut it?
Has the field been hayed last year?
Reason I ask is I did one custom cutting last year. Guys farmer uncle was going to bale.
I found out why the Uncle would not do the cutting. Rocks beat the crap out of my hay bine. Not worth the $10 a acre I charged.

This year I told him I could not cut his hay. He would have to get his Uncle to cut it before he could bale. He said...ok...

I noticed all spring he has been out picking rock. Wonder why?????

That is what they are charging here in North Texas...at least one of the bigger custom cutters here. Also, he charges $12 for 5x5 round bales, .70 per small square and $5-6 per acre to rake. These were last years rates...but he said he was going to stick to those and see how it worked out...

The $12 for 5x5 round bale and .70 for small square is just for the baling....in addition to the $12 per acre to cut and $5-6 per acre to rake. I also heard that another guy charged $15 per round bale just to bale...

the local haybaler dealers are charging $17/bale to rent balers.. so 15 would be in line.

I charge 7.75 but thats only because I would have burning ears --- complaints behind my back that I was gouging them-- since they "HEARD someplace someone was charging $5"

oh and I charge by the hour to mow hay anymore... to many places have fewer acres when you mow than they actually are.. and some good fields are easy to mow.. reward those guys.
