Well I have worked this afternoon trying to put a gauge wheel on the bar and I can't get it. Now the neighbor kid comes down and offers to bring their haybine down on Tues. He wants $6.5 per acre to cut it. He says it is an old 469 New Holland. Is that a fair price. He says it is 9 ft. wide. Won't that be a lot of hay in one swath? I only have a JD 14T. I pull it with a 430 Case. Will it handle that size swath? Seems like a bit too much to me. ?????

Make sure that you wet down the first cutting to ensure that the hay cures even.

Let them mow it rake it and bale it. All you are trying to do is make extra work and nothing but plugging mess. All you need to do 3 steps mow,let lay day, weather determines, rake let bottom side dry, bale it all depends on weather but thats the normal routine. For the price he chargeing thats dirt cheap. I don't do any of it for under $10.00 acre.

I typically rake 18 - 24' of heavy alfalfa together (I cut with a sickle or a haybine, get different configurations....) and bale it with my IHC 300 & NH 270 baler. You should have no problem raking 2 9' swathes together & baling it. But if you have extremely heavy grass, then 9' will work fine.

I really enjoyed the comments about putting the wheel on the baler & baling hi first, then coming back for the bottom cut... & the twin baler message too. :) :) Funny stuff.

I'm kinda wondering if you are a regular having some fun with us, the first messages were pretty good, but once you got on the twin cutting stuff with a wheel attached, thinking April Fools is past already.... ;)

I've stayed out as long as I could stand.

Just let that kid cut it already. 9' is nothing. Last year we triple raked 1st crop w/ a 9' cut, and our little massey 12 swallowed the hay whole. Your baler can handle almost anything, just can't go as fast. We bale cover hay (canary grass) to sell. That stuff is 6-10' when I cut it. we can usually bale in 2nd gear unless the swamp is too rough.

Also, just give up on that guage wheel idea, it just won't work. If you want short drying time, either get a crimper or a haybine w/ the crimper rolls built in. Save yourself the trouble. or better yet sell it off the feild.

I think you'll be in good shape except you'll need another 14T. The Case will pull them as long as one has a trailer hitch. You just won't be able to bale but, what the heck, the way your going about it won't make a difference anyway. Just think of the fun you'll have...

Man you don't have a clue as to what your doing!!
I use an old 460 NH and it is 9 foot and I also use a JD-14T and have no problem. If you rake the hay the right way the 14T will not have any problems. Sounds like its time you go find some old folks to help you out.

No, see....what you need to do is put that gauge wheel on your baler now. That way you can make two passes over the windrows taking the top half first and then coming back for the bottom. Or maybe you should try corn.

I tried that once but corn plugs my old Cunningham crimper right up and the bales are really heavy!

Seeing the kind of advice you are needing, why not sell the hay standing to the kid down the road. Having no more idea about mowing than you have, I dread to see what you might do with a baler and rake. Some folks should not try using farm equipment.

To clean up the mess you have made... $6.50 an acre is a God send. One of the boys at the filling station took pity and sent the kid down to offer you a way out....
