Hay and how bad it is this year.

Here in mid Missouri the hay isn't what it should be this year. I olny have half the fied to go and so far I've only bale about half of what it was in years past. Baled yesterday and where I had 10-12 bales last year I only got 5, sure hope we get some summer rains so maybe I can get a 2nd cutting this fall.

Back in April, it looked pretty dismal for us in the People's Republic of Connecticut as well. Cold, wet and nothing growing. It turned around in May and we are now having a good year and are about 20% over 2004, which was a decent year.

However, Bedstraw is becoming quite a problem and I have begun to spray my lots, which is not cheap. Couple that with the price jump in fertilizer, fuel and twine, and I not sure if a 50 cent per bale price increase for the hay is going to cover it.

The old timers here say it's the wettest it has been since 1952 and No, we ain't sharin'. After 6 or 7 years of all out drouth I believe it is our turn. Hay looks good. I have one crop of alfalfa up and a 2nd coming on nicely.

Just finished baling about 10 acres today. My hay is making about 75% of what it made last year. With the early part of the spring being cool and the very dry late spring has hurt my hay.At last the corn and beans are growing after last weakends 2 inches of rain. I have 125 acreas left to cut and bale. Happy Fathers Day to you and every one best wishes John.

Sure hope the rains for the next 2 days hold off, we've had nothing but rain, rain, rain, I'm driving through mud to try to get it baled. Way over ripe, lots of stemmy volume of course....

Things don't look as good as they could.(SWMO) But with the rains we have had the past week things are looking up. Have gotten some good hay not as much as in times past but good. If we watch and manage we should have enough pasture. I have some oats that will make a mediocer hay crop or some good pasture just have to make a decision an do one or the other.

This is one of the dryer spring and early summers I can remember in Southwest Mo, in my 63 years. With ponds that were already dry and streams needing flushed, the heavy rains we had in late winter were a God send.

I thought it was just me.Most of our hay is about 75 to 80 o/o of last year. The only field that looks good is one down the road we didn"t rent this year since it sold and we were told there would be houses growing there by now. Also it seems to me the ground in these hay fields is extremely dry and as hard as glass.

Our hay it the best I've seen it. We've had a lot of rain after having none all winter, our usual rainy season. I got over two ton per acre of orchard grass on dryland. Granted I only have a few acres at home I hope the rest of the fields I cut do as well.

My bales in the field have been rained on twice now, but it looks like it will dry up this week and I can stack it.

Here in upstarte NY we had a streach of real dry weather, I could not figure out why the farmers werent baling. Turn out we needed rain for the timothy to head,and other grasses to fill out. Too early very little hay, too late may keep raining.
