If I drop the bales in the field is it better to let them dry as they fall or should I walk and turn them 1/4 turn the next day or so? I can't beleive all of the questions you guys have helped me with!!! What a great place.

Small squares should get under cover as soon as you can. they should be dry as they come out of the baler.

Some balers have a turning chute on the back, sets the bales on their sides. This does help a tiny bit under some conditions.

However if you are using time to walk the field & turn the bales, stop wasting time & use that time to load & remove the bales from the field. You want them put away dry, & you want the grass to be growing for next cutting, not hay bales killing it & tracks through the field later smashing down regrowth....

That is how it is here in MN anyhow. :)

I have left hay in the field only one time. I sold the bales in the field, the buyer was to pick them up and haul them. That deal worried me for three days until they were all gone. I fixed a bale chute on the back of the baler to turn the bale a quarter of a turn so that the cut edge was up. I assumed that the flat side down would draw moisture and if nothing else damage the strings.

If you drop them in western Pa, you better pick em all up before bed time. It'll rain on them by morning! Then you will have to play with them.

That goes for Indiana too.We used to stand the bales on end if we couldn't get them all picked up if it looked like rain. That way they only got wet on the ends for the most part.I wonder----- -how many bales I have stood on end???? HMMMMM.
