I have about 25 acres of hay I am cutting with a NH 489 that I have owned for about 2 years. When I bought it I got a complete new bar with knifehead and blades, I also rebuilt the old bar that was on there. I have used the new bar for the last 2 seasons and this season I cut about 20 acres and then the knifehead broke right at the first bolt that holds it to the bar. I put in the old bar and made sure everything was on right, started cutting the rest and after just 20 minutes, the knifehead broke again in the same spot. Is this a coincidence or what something out of whack. I have kept it well greased and could spin the reel and bar by hand.

Now I need a new one but I need it to last longer than 20 minutes.

I finally got a new knife head and cutter bar. I also replaced the first guard nearest the knifehead. When I put it in, it does
not line up with the connection off of the wobble box. There is about a 1/2 inch gap between the top of the knife head and that piece. It appears
that the main part of the frame is bent right at the first guard. I think
when that guard broke the first time, something really whacked it and bent the frame. That is probably why the second one broke so quickly, it
is actually bent down a little. I probably did not see the problem, because the first guard was broken and did not get in the way like the
new guard is.

Ck the guard alinement, also ck the tightness of the bearings in the wobble box.

Are you loosening the knifehead bushing and moving it up or down to meet the wobble box arm without deflecting the bar? In other words, adjusting the bushing vertically to prevent bar deflection. Guard alignment and sharpness could also be a factor.

Thanks, I actually did not know that was adjustable until you mentioned it and I read the repair manual. I will check it next time. However, the new bar was installed for the last 2 years and working fine until it broke. I do wonder if there is something else causing this.

On ours the end knife with the funky half knife got tweaked and jammed causing a break in the same spot.

The other thing that happened was the hired help was cutting way too fast and sheared the bolted ball joint thing off at the weld.
