If you mow hay with a sicle mower with it raised up and then come back lower for a second pass, will it help the hay to dry faster. Seems like it would because there would be twice as many cut ends. I know I may be "thinking outside of the box". I hope somebody agrees with me, I want to prove the guys at the filling station wrong.

Get back in the box on this one.and don't give those loafers down at the fillig station a chance to get even.You will lose on this one.Everywhere the tractor wheels run will cause the mower fits and you will wind up with a stripped mess in the field when you are done.
That reminds me way back when and I thought a good rotary mower would condition as well as cut the alfalfa.What a mess.I almost lost the farm over that fiasco. That was when the first hay conditioners had come out and since I couldn't afford one.Well it was a good idea that didn't work very well. In fact it was an unmitigated disaster.
Or the time the local Deere dealer's son came up with the bright idea to cut hay with a combine with a floating sickle.ANOTHER reason to buy a self propelled combine was the battle cry! Opened up the cylinder and close the chaffer down tight.The one thing he forgot was ----- ROCKS!Need I say more?lol,bob

Turns (corners) are a pain on that 2nd cut since you have to mow in opposite direction on 2nd pass to undercut where your tires made leaners.

Well, I guess but it takes me long enough to cut my hay once. I sure don't want to cut it twice.

Get you a drum or disc mower and leave the sickle bar mowers to the old-timers that have nothing to do but talk about how good it used to be in the horse and buggy days.

The cut stuff from the first round will most likely hang up on the bar and make a mess. If you want to dry it faster drag a conditioner along behind the mower or just be patient and pick your day well.

Dave you are right on all counts. Hay Dr. well you know what a fan I am of the drum/disc mower but maybe the gentleman has only a few acres to cut and does not justify purchasing a new mower.

daddyj;

Not only will your mower plug up but cutting with the mower bar raised would be hard on the sickle as your bar would be flopping up and down.
