It's adjustable for height of raking, angle of the raking against the windrow and track position offset from the tractor or windrow(left or right trailing). I do some real uneven ground and got real tired of the 3pt mounted digging to China then grabbing air on the bumps. This setup completely eliminates this when the front tractor wheels go over a mound. Also, my very irregular shaped and sized fields mean lots of wierd corners, the trailer method eliminates this also. And, I looked for a 56 NH but at one 4th to one 8th the cost, plus the mods, I picked this up instead. In the "up" position the wheels will clear virtually all the windrows I've tried to cross. Agree on the tendancy to ball the windrow second lap and will have to live with it for now. Thanks for the answers.

I bought a farm hand used at an auction about 5 years ago and sense then I have never even tried to hitch my roll bar rake.

I could be wrong but I have always thought the idea hay rake would be a 3 pt hitch model with a hydraulic drive on the basket.That way it could be set for any condition including big fluffy windrows or tightly wound ones, also for tedding and when you were done,simply pick it up and drive out of the field without messing up any windrows. But it would have to have large wheels in the back.I never saw a smooth hayfield in my life.

as for wheel rakes... OOOOH YUCK!

used one for the second time in my life friday because my rollbar rake had a gearbox explode....

I've raked hay for over 35yrs... never done suck a bad job of raking in my life --- it was partly me and partly the Vrake... maybe the 3pt 4wheel rake we will use tommarrow will be differnt... BUT I Have a new appriciation of roll rakes.

Wheel rakes do a fair job of raking hay once. But if you have to rake again it tends to bunch the windrows. It's just hard to beat a good rol-a-bar

With the wheels & because the hub support arms are _behind_ the direction of travel, it should be a pretty good deal for raking hay. Esp in your bumpy conditions. I have a NH 55 rollabar & a simple 5 wheel 3pt wheel rake, each has it's pluses & minuses. Yours would be somewhere in between for utility & ability vs cost. As you said above, I'm sure it works plenty good enough for you.
