I looked through the archives but wasn"t finding exactly want I was looking for.

I have a JD3010 with a 6ft King Cutter. A neighbor wants a horse pasture(That hasn"t been grazed all year) bushhoged. I"m not really sure what to charge. They are a neighbor and potential future hay customer(when I get all my acerage going).

I really want to charge per acre. I don"t like the per hour charge, mainly I don"t want them telling me to driver faster and again they are a future customer.

What is a decent per acre charge? They are about 1/4 mile down the road, the pasture was clean when planted last year. It"s about 8 acres total 2, 4 acre rectangle.

I would love to bale the grass but they didn"t put in wide enough gates to get the MO-co through.

Joe in IN, Be careful in charging per acre, unless you have been over that same ground previously. I do what you people call "hogging" [hope I got that right] professionally. I don't recall how many times that I've been "caught" by charging on a per acre basis. There are that many variables to take into consideration that can blow your time and costs out, and it might end up costing you more than you charge.
Some of the variables are,- what type of grass are you cutting, how wet is it, how high is it, how rough is the ground, [can slow you to a snails pace if left rough after previous ploughing etc], how much rubbish is on it, -ask the owner, they always tell that it is absolutely clear/clean, and then only to run into a pile of old wire, rubbish, twine, scrap metal, rope, cable, hose, concrete, rocks, tree stumps, water cocks/meters, etc etc, [been there and done all that] and spend an hour or two trying to cut cr_p from the rotor shaft of the mower, hopefully without damage to machine or shaft seal.
Having said that I think you would be going very well to cut maybe 2,5 acres per hour with the gear you've got, without any unseen stopages, so you would be looking at about 3 to 3.5 hours minimum. Can't suggest an hourly rate for you. but on similar job in Aussie, I would be asking $Aust60/hour, that equals about $US45/hour
I don't want to turn you off the job, but tread cautiously, after all no one wants to work for nothing.
Good luck to you.

Joe, Right is Right, and fair is fair. Be realistic here.
Time wises it will take you About 3hrs to mow each 4 acre patch. Total 6hrs
On that DSL used by your 3010 will be Aproximatly 15 gal if you are shreddin heavy grass/weeds and such. Probably 10 gal will be what you actually use. So..... .
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ---
Your time at $12/hr..... .=$96.00
DSL @ 10@.$2.00/gal.=$20.00
Wear-n-Tear ..... ..... ....=$20.00
..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..----- -
..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .$136.00
So at $17.00/acre there is your B-E-P. You can't aford to be less than $17.00/ acre. If you do decide to do it by the hr. No one can tell you how fast to run. Only the operator knows what is safe/and at what speed that gets the customer a nice finished product and where you make money!
The way is see it a $150.00 bid for this job is not out of line. especially on 2 patches, with corners to work out, and such. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

where is diesel selling for $2.00/gal? cheapest i have seen in se texas is $2.24/gal. also $12/hr for labor is very very cheap. most tractor mowers here are in the $25-35/hr range. Don't cut y'self to cheap. only reason to bushhog for others is to make money, not break even.

Morning Hay!, My DSL cost $1.84 on the last load We got. So I just rounded up to get close if he was buying Road DSL.
I just took a Average cost of day workers and added $2.00. To get him a hr price to work off of.
I personally won't touch shredding for less than 20/acre with a batwing shredder. On larger acers.
I know I can cover 5 acres/ hour in tough grass and weed conditions.
I will be willing to bet a BIG RED sodawater that the fellowers with prices you mentions are on a smaller tractor and shredder working out the smaller odd jobs.... so to cover hauling, ins and such.
Make it a good one !
Later,
John A.

In my area most charge by the hour to brush hog a field, going rate is $40-50 an hour. As far a baleing hay useing a brush hog to mow I have never done it and haven't heard of any one doing so.

$10 per acre will work. But don't sell yourself short. You don't need the MoCo to bale hay. I have baled a ton (many tons) of hay I cut with a bush hog type cutter. Nice thing about it is the stems are cut in lots of places, it dries fast, the hog is pretty terrain tolerant, and for horses it is very palatable; cows it doesn't matter. Just rake it into windrows while a little green as when it gets fully dried, you have a fair amount of loss, if not rowed already.....but if you were just going to hog it anyway, any hay is a bonus...right?

Go for it dude!
