Down went the hay!

We finally got the hay cut last night, after waiting through several weeks of unpredictable weather.

third party image

It was cut around 6:30pm or so and was rained on hard at about 11pm. That shouldn't hurt the quality, but I'm sure praying the rain will hold off for the next 4-5 days.

This is the first time we've cut this particular field, which is just about 4 acres in size. It was downed with an Ollie 1650 and an older NH haybine. We're all small farmers in this valley, so no one has anything that resembles "nice" equipment. :) We make do with what we can..!

The hay itself is an uneven mix of fescue, clover, and alfalfa.

Very pretty picture BUT....

Down is the easy part, let us know when you has it UP! 4 acres is a piece of cake.

Amen... The hard part is still ahead. I help my neighbor work some 100 acres of hay, and we're just now getting started. Many hours on the Farmall C (the raking machine) await!

Luckily, the rain has continued to hold off for us.

Hey, what do you mean by "nice" equipment. I run a 1650 with a NH 477 haybine and I think its pretty nice. (of course I have to talk real nice to it & give it plenty of compliments or it can act a little tempermental). Sure does look like you had some fun!

I cut hay yesterday with my 1950 Oliver 77 and an old NH 460 haybine. But it hasn't been rained on, yet and the weather man says no rain in the near future so maybe I'll get it baled saturday.

billOH,
Now that's a picture worth framing.
I see the trees have limbs that have grown out over your field. Mine was doing the same thing. I spent two weeks working along the edge of a field with Mr Stihl (14" bar) and you'd be surprised at how much territory I re-claimed from the dadgone trees!!!
Nice pix - post another when you get it raked.

Help - I think I'm losing it!! I want to see pictures of hay -

old,
Oliver 77 - man what a machine - last tme I saw one of those someone was using it to run an auger at a silo around Burnt Prarie, IL. If I remember right, it has a cowling that completly encloses the engine. I think his was a diesel (or very noisy gas model) Seems a shame that that's all the guy did with it.

Most folks threw those side shutters/panels away, but they came with them.

They have a heck of a rear end, hold up well to pto type work. I have a Super 77 that was my unckle's. Dad had a 88, was his big tractor all those years, finally traded it off when it was burning as much oil as gas.
