Weeds in Seedling Alfalfa

Have a newly planted Alfalfa/Timothy field Planted May 8. I'm starting to get some weeds poking up(dandelion, lambsquarter, velvet leaf).

Last year I spayed my field with 24D-B and it worked great. The problem is that you aren't supposed to use the alfalfa for 60 days after spraying. I do follow the label so that puts me into august before getting any hay from this field.

Isthis the best option for a weed free field. lat years planting is basically weed free, it looks great. I hate to mess with what works but wanted to get some hay from the new field before august. What about mowing a little bit? Would that help at all?

Thoughts?

the year before we planted our alf/orchord grass I sprayed with round up and the two years before we had barley and used Achieve extra gold and had a clean field. we had a floater put on the seed. I harrowed and packed it. Gave it a light irrigate. Soon we had the nicest field of alf/orchard grass AND THE GREATEST FIELD OF RED ROOT(pig weed). Holy smokes did it look bad. I cut it before the weeds set seed , sold it cheap and took a second cut. Next year 7.1 tons in 3 cuts on irrigation. Beautiful crops since. Don't be sad about the weeds. Cut them early and away you go. Fox tail a different story for another day. Bad stuff!

I have used a combination of Pursuit and Poast to cover grass and broadleaf weeds. I can not remember the details but I think it was a month or less.

I do not have the sheet in front of me but the reason we use the POAST is to kill grass. I don't know if the Pursuit weakens or harms it in any way

Joe, I'm in west-central IN. I planted 10 acres of new alfalfa/red clover/timothy/orchardgrass on April 15. Right now the foxtail is about a foot taller than anything else. I can hardly resist the urge to go out and mow it. But I know that if I do, I'll be hurting the young seedlings. I'll wait and cut it around Aug. 1. By then it'll be too late for the weeds to make a serious comeback, but early enough for the young plants to build up food reserves before frost. Then next spring the hay will be vigorus enough to get a jump on the weeds and smother them out. Now, if it was just that easy to control the leafhoppers! Jim.

Joe,

This always happens first time outta the chute on alfalfa. Cut 'er a little early and from then on, you are in the chips without the weeds.

Mowing isn't going to do anything to control the dandelions and they'll only get worse. I think you will have to chose between holding off the harvest or living with some dandelions unless the other chemical choices will work with your seeding.
I personally like to seed in early august after wheat or oats or interseed with the grain but somtimes the seeding hurts the grain crop.
