we have a NH320 small square baler. I make our grass/alfalfa bales about 67 lbs. When the bale comes out of the chamber they have a banana shape. Ends pointing up,as it was laying in the chamber. Left to right are straight. With the 1/4 turn chute dropping the bale for to be picked up with the bale wagon, you have to carefull if you pick them up the wrong way they or sometimes they flip over crossing the feeder to the first table. Also the bars the are on top and bottom of the chamber that apply the tension to the bale are both bent outwards from the chamber, about midway. I have three sets of wedges , so I don't really need a lot of hydraulic pressure. Had the local NH shop foreman look at this. He said he had never seen it before. I am going to straighten the bars and weld angle iron on the backs of each and see what happens. If anyone has seen this or has any ideas on what is happening, please comment. Also looked at a neighbours 320 and his bars are straight as an arrow.

The only time I have seen that happen is when the bale are not tight enough or are too long.
The bent bars make it hard to control tension. I had one buckle which jammed the hay in the bale chute.

I am not sure about what models butI understand NH had a false chamber back that was adjustable to help with short thin or long hay. Check the manual to see for sure about this. One thing I have seen is missing or broken hay dogs that hold the top and bottom of bale between strokes.

Also - The forks that sweeo the hay into the bale chamber may need adjusting.

It's caused by the feed to the bale chamber. Get a manual and it should tell how to correct the problem. My old Ford baler has deflectors and an adjustable "door" that can be used to regulate the flow of hay. Also try making your windrows a tad less dense - helps to keep a steady flow of grass into the baler while tractor moves at a constant speed. I'll see if I can find my manual and get some more info for ya'.

thanks for the help guys. The bales are banana shape upwards sitting in the chamber, not left to right. I know what you mean to adjust the feed fingers Illinois boy, but I don't see that is the problem. I have a manual and understand what you are getting at.I took the bottom tension bar if thats what you want to call it( 4ft. long 6in. wide in a U shape) In the AM I'll straighten it and will weld 1/4 X1 1/2 in. angle iron on to it. Any other ideas I'll appreciate. Thank you fellas. Illinois boy, if you think I am looking in the wrong direction, please feel free to correct me.

I think the ballooning of the bale chamber is making a gap big enough to allow these bales to get a vertical bow in them as the plunger shoves them out.

Your plan to take the sides off, straighten and reinforce them should solve the bent bale problem.

Any chance somebody had really, really, really cranked down the tension adjustment and somehow made the bale chamber swell like that?

Maybe a bale of something really dry was left in the baler out in the weather, got rained/snowed on and absorbed enough moisture to swell and bend those pieces, hard to imagine but pressure over time can do that I guess.

Good luck, and let us know how it comes out!

Maybe before and after pics?

hayman, how close together are bales on ground( how many to acre)? How large are your windrows? Lower pto speed will help or larger windrows.I think you are not feeding enough hay at a time. Tx Jim

I have a 320 and sometimes it likes to stick more hay on the left side of the bale in light swaths.

Anyway it sounds like your saying they are bending the other way.

I have never had that happen on my balers. Or seen the tension rails bent outward. I have seen the top one bent down though.

I'd first may those rails straight like they're suppost to be then give it a try.
